Magnesium, What Is It Good For?

Magnesium is influential in more than 300 metabolic processes. This makes it one of the most important (if not the most important) mineral of all. It’s actually more important than calcium, potassium or sodium and even regulates how all three of them work inside the body.

Dr. Norman Shealy, a prominent neurosurgeons and a pioneer in the development of pain medicines, has said “Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency” and “magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body.”

And Dr. Mark Hyman writes, “A deficiency in this critical nutrients makes you twice as likely to die as other people, according to a study published in The Journal of Intensive Care Medicine. It also accounts for a long list of symptoms and diseases — which are easily helped and often cured by adding this nutrient. In fact, in my practice, this nutrient is one of my secret weapons against illness. Yet up to half of Americans are deficient in this nutrient and don’t know it.”

Does anyone here use Magnesium oil?

I tried taking Mg supplements and they kept me awake at night (I know it's the opposite of what should happen!)

I am using magnesium oil - find it helpful with sleep and also eases muscles etc. after gardening or overdoing in general

Thanks, I think it might help my aching shoulder muscles which are getting on my nerves now!

I use Magnesium oil as well. I started after I read somewhere that oral magnesium has a very low absorption rate. I use the EASE brand as it is the only one that doesn't make me itch :)

Thanks Mikka, I'll try that

Yes I use magnesium oil (BetterYou) bobsmydog, a few squirts on my belly before I turn in. I have found the magnesium & B6 supps I have been taking x 3 a day have helped enormously with my sleeping.

That said, for some unknown reason I am not sleeping at the moment.....another mystery I need to sort out?!!

in reply to Margo

I have tried the BetterYou brand of magnesium oil and it makes my skin burn and itch. I've tried it a few times and the same reaction. I find the same with Epsom Salts in the bath.

I have no problem with epsom salts so I guess I'll be able to use any brand.

I've been soaking in epsom salts off and on for years trying to ease my itchy skin rashes which miraculously disappeared when I went on thyroid treatment!

It does say on the bottle that it may 'tingle' if levels are low, it did with me - a bit spooky but it came right - but everyone's different.

My daughter makes her own & I have to have my weekly long soak in an Epson salt bath....

it's an old favourite of Dr Sircus and Dr Osbourne too...

It did/does the same to me, but as I understand it, when it stings it is because your body needs magnesium. As I persevered the itch affect lessened.

How long did you have to use it before the itch affect stopped? The burning kept me awake so I would have to try very very small patch tests and build up I suppose.

Magnesium oil and magnesium pills did nothing for me, but magnesium citrate dissolved in water clears up my constipation.

like a dose of salts?

It's called Natural Calm, it's an ionic blend of magnesium citrate you mix in water and drink.

I've never had salts straight. The Natural Calm is flavored like lemon berry so it's not bad.

Sounds a pleasant drink, magnesium is good stuff in various forms, if you need it - like B12, if too much it's excreted anyway...

I buy equine magnesium sulphate 3kg for £4 for my bath - & sometimes add a slice of lemon to the jar - however then I feel the need to eat a few crunchy granules...

they also have a mixed supplement called "moody mare" mostly magnesium, which has a calming effect - it's difficult to resist the temptation to take it to work... for research purposes only....

Spare, Moody Mare :-D Wish I'd heard of that when I used to ride. I'd have shovelled it into the nasty mare who liked to dump me off and chase me around trying to bite and bash me.

D'you slip granules into your colleagues' coffee?
