My migraine practitioner (a physio employed by a hospital to advise patients on managing migraines) recommended 600mg per day. I only take 400 and it helps. Have been on this for over 6 months. It helps with constipation too. Not sure about your dose though. You could try googling it and see what comes up..
This is a similar dose to the one recommended by Dr Carolyn Dean.

For reasons not fully understood, the body does not retain magnesium very well; certainly not as well as it holds onto calcium or iron, for example. This is possibly due to the fact that tannins, oxalates, and phytic acid all bind with magnesium, making it unavailable to the body.
In addition, the body consumes/needs a lot of magnesium to metabolise glucose and at a frightening ratio 24:1. For each molecule of sugar, you need 24 molecules of magnesium.
General dosage recommendations range from about 3 to 10 milligrams per pound of body weight, depending upon physical condition, requirements for growth (as in children), and degree of symptoms.
Taking such high doses of Magnesium can be beneficial for therapeutic purposes and for a short period of time and while addressing other minerals and vitamins (vitamins b12, folate, Vit D, manganese, iron, copper, potassium, sodium) that will be affected by the presence of too much magnesium in the body.
Balance is key!

Magnesium is one of those things most of us are short of, is needed by all cells, and the body will only take what it needs. At first a larger dose of Mag will cause the body to be able to flush out the toxins effectively! there are different kinds. Magnesium Citrate is recommended.
Am upping daily dose from 250 to 500 - restarting serious running training and hope this will help.

Not been on the site for a long while.
Crikey, a lot has happened since I last posted and have developed my thoughts on a lot of things.
Will try to summarise over the weekend and get back to you.

A lot of what I thought was true about nutrition and health I have had to tear up and relearn - very humbling I accept.
So cutting a long story short, my current thinking is - and please accept this is my experience and may not correlate with others:
-magnesium oil is the single most important support to good health available on the planet today. I spray on significant quantities each morning and find no need to take orally.
- standard vitamin and minerals are actually dangerous if you do not have a deficiency. In my case my levels on every single factor noted as important to consider on these threads are either spot on or actually on the very high end, this includes b12 and zinc.
-I adore strong black coffee in quantities and I belatedly have come to accept that this is not great for wider health. I groan as I write this such is my love for the stuff. I will be pulling back to decaf.
- gluten is important to reduce although I am not fully GF. I will try to do this over time.
-hydration is key and especially to use water without chlorine. I will be getting a filter shortly (ditto for shower hose)
- I have tried to eat plenty of animal protein as part of a balanced diet. I have in the past few days started a vegetarian approach for the first time in 30 years or so. I just do not feel that I digest flesh well and do not see the nutrition risk / rewards.
-I have gone back to a very mixed exercise schedule of indoor rowing and treadmill running and weights. This feels a better compromise for now.
- I have massively improved my diet in terms of more natural foods and fresh fruits and herbs. I will over time did deeper into the more esoteric bits of this and pick up stuff from medical medium book eg celery juicing.
- I have started selenium combined with ACE as I feel I really need this. I will also restart black cumin seed oil as I felt this helped support higher intensity training. Beyond that, I fullly accept there is no magic answer out there and will put efforts into general nutrition rather than more pills.
I am not sure if any of the above is of any interest or relevance but it simply sums up where I am at with all this.
