High tgAb, Anti-TPO Ab, normal TSH, T3, T4...

Hello, can somebody please put my mind at ease, cause I'm really scared.

I have recently had a private blood thyroid test (my sister had autoimmune thyroid condition and thyroid cancer at 20 years and had her thyroid removed).

My results are:

TSH - 1,79 (normal)

free thyroxine - 13,5 (normal)

Total thyroxine (T4) - 79 (normal)

Free T3 - 4,8 (normal)

TgAb 258,7 (elevated)

AntiTPO Ab - 66 (elevated)

Can it indicate cancer in some way?

I can handle the thought of having Hashimoto and I will deal with that. It's just I have 2 small children, my youngest is only one year old and really stressed right now about having something terrible.

Will GP accept private blood test results? Will ultrasound help to rule out thyroid cancer? Where do I go from here? Thank you

Hello ekaterinas,

Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear of your worries and about your sister..

Your high levels of thyroid antibodies are indicative of Hashimotos and as it is a progressive disease .. your thyroid hormone levels will eventually diminish.

There is nothing in your results to suggest you have cancer. Do you have a lump or nodules or a hoarse voice .?..

Even if you were to have nodules as shown by an ultra sound scan.. most are fine ... I have a multi nodular goitre which was deemed as fine.

You need to discuss this with your GP. He will either accept your results or prefer to conduct his own. If he does the later ensure he retests for the thyroid antibodies as it is sometimes easier to get prescribed the thyroid meds when diagnosed with Hashi .

Please post any further questions.

Welcome to the forum, Ekaterinas2015.

Your results do NOT indicate cancer :) Please don't worry.

Thyroid cancer is very rare. Unless you have a lump (nodule) in your throat or neck it is highly unlikely you have cancer. Even if you do have a nodule 95% are benign. Ask your GP to palpate (examine) your throat and neck and if a swelling is detected ask for an ultrasound scan to put your mind at rest.

You do have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) because thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies are elevated. It is likely you will develop hypothyroidism in the future but it may take years. Nevertheless your GP should test your thyroid function annually. You can slow progression by adopting 100% gluten-free diet which may help reduce Hashi flares and antibodies.

Hi Ekaterina2015

I agree with Flower and clutter, your antibodies are high so suggests you have hashimotos which is an autoimmune condition. Going gluten free will help with all autoimmune condition.

I don't think your results suggest any cancer. Please don't worry.

Take your results to your GP and ask him to retest and compare both results.

Good luck

Thanks Wendy, Flower and clutter for your prompt replies and information,

I will probably try to request an ultrasound to reassure myself that there are no suspicious nodules. My mother has few benign nodules and she is fine... I'm ready to go gluten free as my son is already 100% gluten free (by other reasons) for 1 year and I will simply join him now.
