What kind of Thyroid I have? The doctor said, can not cured by medication, he said I got to option to do a biopsy or a surgery? Can you please advise what to do? I'm really worried.
I had the result of my analysis and meet my end... - Thyroid UK
I had the result of my analysis and meet my endocrinologist yesterday. the result of my analysis: TSH-1.23 mIU/L, FT3 6.53 pmol/L FT4 13.5.
Ednalaya, can you elaborate please? Why has your endocrinolgist said you need a biopsy or surgery. Do you have a goiter or a nodule? Are you on thyroid medication now?
Do you think it is possible for my doctor to prescribe a medicine for me?
Ednalaya, the endo will want to biopsy to rule out cancer and to see whether nodules in the goiter are secreting thyroid hormone. This is known as Fine Needle Aspiration. A local anaesthetic will be applied to your neck and the needle will be inserted into your goiter to remove cells for analysis. The procedure isn't painful but is uncomfortable because you have to lie with your throat thrust upward. There will be bruising and soreness for two or three days but paracetamol helps with this. When the results are available your endo will recommend watch and wait if the results are benign, repeat FNA if results are inconclusive or surgery if results are positive for cancer. Thyroid cancer is still very rare and is one of the easiest cancers to treat.
Please don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions.
Is there any medicine that is advisable for me to take, as a treatment in my case?
No, Ednalaya. The goiter needs to be investigated first. If it is benign and isn't impacting on nearby organs then Levothyroxine may be trialled to see whether it shrinks the goiter but this may not be a suitable option as long as your TSH and FT3 remain at their current levels as you may become hyperthyroid (overactive).
What is the best thing for me to do? Do I need to do the biopsy for the meantime?
Ednalaya, I would strongly recommend having the biopsy done. It doesn't commit you to any surgical treatment but ignoring any issues will not make them go away and delaying diagnosis can lead to complications.
