Credit to 'Thyroid Sexy' for this:
If you have Hashimoto's /hypothyroidism or have had your thyroid gland removed and you are still symptomatic ie: you're still exhausted, your joints ache, your body is swollen, you can't remember anything, you're having difficulty getting a deep breath, you're having mental health problems, YES including panic attacks, depression and suicidal thoughts, you have high BP, low BP, heart problems, high cholesterol and on and on (Please read our hypothyroid symptoms list in the Notes section, included in that is hypothyroidmom.com's list, which is extensive and accurate) you are NOT optimally treated. T4 only medications very often do NOT resolve our symptoms and bring us back to wellness. I know, I remained so ill on Synthroid for a year. It did NOT work for me. T4 medications are Synthroid, Levothyroxine, Thyroxine, etc. They are the INACTIVE hormone. Many MANY of us do not convert it to the ACTIVE hormone very well, which is T3. T3 is what gets to our cells and makes us WELL again. If you have a doctor who does NOT understand this, FIRE him/her and keep moving until you find one who does. People have been through as many as 25 doctors or MORE trying to find help for this. Many people have traveled out of state for the right treatment. You also have to have adequate levels of Vit D, Vit B12, Iron, Ferritin, and cortisol levels (adrenal hormone) in order to convert T4 to T3 and for it to transport to the cells properly. Please read the FAQ link in the Notes section, it explains levels, labs among other things. We also have a patient recommended doctor list in the Notes section with other linked resources to find a good doctor.
It is important to understand the following:
"Every cell in the body has receptors for thyroid hormone. These hormones are responsible for the most basic aspects of body function, impacting ALL major systems of the body.
Thyroid hormone directly acts on the brain, the G.I. tract, the cardiovascular system, bone metabolism, red blood cell metabolism, gall bladder and liver function, steroid hormone production, glucose metabolism, lipid and cholesterol metabolism, protein metabolism and body temperature regulation.
For starters.
You can think of the thyroid as the central gear in a sophisticated engine. If that gear breaks, the entire engine goes down with it."
FIGHT for your health, ASK for help, from husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, friends and family members if you're too sick to do it on your own. You CAN get well from this. You just have to find the right doctor to work with, and the right meds that are going to work for you. AND, support is so important, ASK for help!! PLEASE..... DON'T GIVE UP!!
