Fybogel mebeverine

Salcombe27Green profile image

I was prescribed fybogel mebeverine recently as mentioned in my earlier post. I only took 2 sachets as it made my diarrhea worse. I did wonder if i should have persevered and taken it for longer. I have since been self medicating on the occasional Imodium but the diarrhea ( i.e very soft stools) still persists 4 or 5 times a few hours after an evening meal or unfortunately during the night too. I have no discomfort other than the slight cramp feeling when I know I need to empty my bowels quickly. Usually it is foul smelling too. I feel quite down with this uncontrollable condition and sometimes question if it is actually diverticulosis ( diagnosed after my colonoscopy). Does anyone have similar symptoms who has tried fybogel mebeverine with success?

Hi,

In a previous post I called gut issues in general a minefield, there isn’t a one solution for all thing. I have diverticulosis and it’s taken me 4 years to find a happy medium-for now!

I tried high fibre, Fybogel, probiotics, low fodmap diet etc etc but nothing helped. Purely by accident in preparation for a colonoscopy I found that a diet as low in fibre as possible made my guts calm down.

Digestion was still happening too quickly so just as an experiment I tried loperamide once a day- so far this has put me on an even keel. I remember my GP’s initial diagnosis being diverticular disease and ‘fast transit IBS’. Basically my guts work too quickly, everything rushes through so doesn’t allow my body to absorb nutrients properly so explained the constant lethargy and weakness. I did a lot of research on various websites, forums and medical papers and learned an awful lot about how my guts work. The most interesting and relevant part was learning how the intestines deal with fluid. The small intestine absorbs water, the large intestine extracts it…..if it works ‘normally’!

This totally changed how I was approaching things. Water not being extracted, too much water left in the poo equals diarrhoea!

Loperamide slows my guts down, nutrients and water are processed properly, I get one normal bowel movement a day and the lethargy and weakness has reduced 99%.

Sorry if this is a long post but if my experiences can help others then it’s all good.

Good luck and think outside the box 😊

Hi, I've just been diagnosed with diverticulosis after ct colonography scan, this was because my fit test came back abnormal, I've also got Rectocele, piles fissure etc, I have to drink alot of water each day because of the prolapse which drives me mad because I'm not thirsty 😐 I've found for a few years my food travels too fast and sounds like the philharmonic orchestra playing in my tummy it just whizzs through, my body isn't absorbing any nutrients 😒 I always thought loperamide bunged you up🤔 guess we're all different 😉 good luck with this journey 🙂

Loperamide slows things down. I took one a day on a recent holiday, and it worked well. I have rapid transit too.

Hi Teen Is there a test you can do for how fast food travels through your body?

Teen1960 profile image
Teen1960 in reply toLetabia

I really don't know but would be interested if there was, it's been like it quite some time plus my tummy hasn't been right since I had my colonography ct scan 🤔 I blame that solution you have to drink to clear out too 🙄 if you find anything out I'd love to know 😊

I saw once on t.v that you can track food by eating sweetcorn as the body does not break it down. You eat a tablespoon of sweet corn and avoid any other food with sweet corn in it and wait until it reappears the other end. It really depends if sweetcorn is ok for you. There is also the blue muffin test, you can google it for recipe etc. I have not tried it personally.

Thank you very much for the information

Yes, you swallow capsules at different times, they are specifically for xray. They then measure how quickly the capsule goes through the body and this shows transit time. I have Slow transit.

Sounds familiar ,But I’m curious as to why you have to drink a lot of water. I keep being told drink plenty of water ( which I do anyway) but it’s never been mentioned it’s because of. My prolapse. I also found out through a CT Scan, but I suffer a lot of pain,if I go to the toilet or not.

Hi, I already knew about the rectocele prolapse and I'd been advised to drink more water because I barely drank water before, the ct scan was because my fit test came back as abnormal at 37.1 so they wanted to rule out cancer, that's when they found the diverticulosis 1 pocket either side of the colon, thankfully no cancer 👍

Thank you so much for that information. Do you take your Imodium in the morning or evening? I am trying to avoid losing sleep with having to get up 2 or more times in the early hours which sometimes can stress me out in the day.

I find that taking it after my evening meal gives me a bowel movement at a reasonable time in the day. Took a bit of experimenting!

Hi. Sorry to hear you haven’t had much success with Fybogel Mebeverine. I have it on prescription and take one sachet a day before my evening meal. However I have IBS (C) so need it to keep me regular. Also it helps calm my tummy if my meal contains anything that would cause discomfort or cramps. I wouldn’t take it if I had diarrhoea as it soften stools so presumably would make things worse. I do sympathise as this IBS journey is so hit and miss. I see others who have posted manage their symptoms with Loperamide. I only have to take one of these and I can’t go for a week! I do hope you find a regime that helps you soon x

I have IBS now with fecal accidents it has effected my mental health and my social life I take Mebeverine before meals and 1/2 of a Loperamide tablet daily. If I'm going out I have found Immodium Instants that melt under the tongue very effective. I am coping better untill I get a bad flare day and then my anxiety starts again. Just remember you are not alone we are all here to support each other. X

I’m with you on the anxiety I don’t think I’ve been in a pub or anything socially for years

One day you feel in control then you have a bad spell and your stress levels go up! I have the Imodium capsules so halving them isn't an option. The melts are great but more expensive. I'm grateful to those of you who have responded. Thank you.

I have taken fobogel on its own,on prescription, and stopped it ,as it contained aspartame. I dislike the after taste of this artificial sugar, and I fail to understand why it is added to bowel medications.I prefer buscopan to mebeverine. Mebeverine contains lactose.
