Hi

Been a while as I have been quite stable.

so not been abroad for 6-7 years and on

1st September went on holiday abroad, very very anxious flyer, that day bowels were bad put it down to nervous. All inclusive holiday in Spain day 2, bloating, wind struggling to go to the toilet. Forget to take laxatives with me but took windeeze capsules which I was taking like 3 times a day. Was helping with wind but not a great deal. I was struggling with the bloating and discomfort so went to the pharmacy got some laxatives looked like senna. These helped me go to the toilet slightly but not properly.

day 3 on the holiday I started with the worst right sided back pain, this happened every morning was taking pain relief which helped. (Husband said was the beds in the hotel)

We returned home the following week, bowels all over the place abdo discomfort and still this right sided back pain. The pain in my back was waking me in the night so I went to the doctors 3 days later where they said I had a kidney infection and give me antibiotics.

The Friday came this is 14 days later , I now had left sided back back and left lower abdo pain started (I thought the kidney infection can’t have moved).

I feel nauseated all the time and the pain now feels across all my back and left abdo.

am constantly taking pain killers and hot water bottles, my bowels still don’t feel right am not overly constipated but still taking laxatives to help me go.

sorry long thread, as it’s been a few weeks feeling like this my health anxiety getting the better of me and my mind going in to over drive thinking the worst case, due to the amount of pain I have been in for over 2 weeks now.

Could all this be an IBS flare up or should I be worrying ? When should I go back to the GP ?

I was doing so well back to my base line with my bowels no pain and how I feel crippled with pain in my back and abdo

Feeling really low any advise would be greatly appreciated 🥲

Thanks for reading if you got to the end x

I’m sorry to hear about your condition. There is no doubt in my mind that you should go back to your doctor’s surgery, and ask for an urgent appointment. Your doctor needs to take a detailed history, and to examine you. If you can’t get an appointment, and I hesitate to suggest this, you need to attend your nearest walk- in centre or casualty- I’m not certain whether you’re based in the UK. There might be a straightforward cause for your presenting symptoms, but that cannot be established without a proper history and examination. I would, also, very respectfully suggest, that this forum is not the place to seek acute, specialised medical advice. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for your reply.

When I went to the doctors last week she examined my abdomen and believed the pain to be from my kidney that’s why she treated me for a kidney infection.

I feel am having an IBS flare up, if am not better in a few days I will try the GP again.

I wrote on here just to see if anyone had any similar issues.

Thanks

Of course. I’m not reproaching you, but your symptoms sounded very troublesome, and I thought it wise that you sorted them out quickly. I hope you feel better

If you've been on antibiotics, this could be causing an IBS flare. In future if you need antibiotics take saccharomyces boulardii at the same time. This is a beneficial yeast that won't be impacted by the antibiotics. Plus a probiotic at least 2 hours away from each antibiotic dose. You can take probiotics to help you out now. Alforex works best for me and has been studied for IBS.

The infection could easily move from 1 kidney to the other.

So sorry to hear you are suffering go back to your GP maybe the antibiotics haven't worked and you need tests or CT scan to see how your kidneys are doing. If results are OK you can then concentrate on your IBS and get a good probiotic Alflorex has been recommended . I do hope you feel better soon and get some answers. Sending love and hugs your way.x

I do know that for me, IBS can leave me alone and even kid me it's gone away. for quite some time, then come and hit me with a curveball just when least expected. It has an evil mind of its own. So yes, that can happen, especially when triggered off by something unusual (such as your travel you aren't used to.)

But if your doctor diagnosed a kidney infection not long ago, and now you are still in pain and have nausea and other things, then my advice is to get back to your GP asap or call 111, as they can be very good at getting a doctor to call you back fairly quickly.

You can't rule out that the kidney infection hasn't gone away. And remember you have two kidneys, one left, one right, so it might be possible pain could move.

It's best to be on the safe side and rule that out first, before dealing with the possible IBS flare.

Also, antibiotics can really upset the gut, so if it isn't kidneys, you could perhaps try a good probiotic, or one that can often help, so I hear, with antibiotic side effects like Saccharomyces Boulardii
