Tenesmus - Urgency

Anyone out there struggling with tenesmus? Been experiencing urgency for 3 months virtually nonstop. Only a couple of days relief here and there. Also it gets worse whenever I walk or stand, if I sit all day I am usually fine. Also seems to get worse after a shower or after bm. Tried everything from imodium, to mebeverine, buscopan... topical h cream seems to help a bit. Any thoughts? Shared experiences? Feel like I'm loosing the plot here.

Hello. I have had bouts of tenesmus for about 20 years. Occasionally when bad I see a colorectal consultant who finds internal rectum prolapses or hemorrhoids which are usually treated with banding. Success rate is variable. However difficult, I try to avoid any sort of straining which means keeping my stool in good order and in my case avoiding things that make the stool too soft - needs bulk to work properly so avoiding herbal laxatives like Fybogel. I also use suppositories. Occasional use of milk of magnesia to clear things out. I do think internal examination by specialist, like I've had, is important and not painful.

yes I have suffered with it terribly and sometimes still do, I have found haemorrhoid cream inside and out applied 3-4 times a day help and I get zapain pain killers from my GP, I take 1-2 zapain at bedtime and it helps keep it mostly away, if I get a hard stool or strain it can bring it on with a vengeance so I try to eat veg that keep me regular but without upsetting my ibs

I seem to have finally gotten a few things that help. I started on Colestipol awhile back after I heard a friend was on it. It has made a huge difference in my world. Its a cholesterol medicine and helps bind things up for me. You have to play with the dose a little to see what's best for you, but finally I can live my life close to a normal person. LOL When I am on a cruise I take one at night and 2 in the morning, and can actually go eat. There are still times when I eat wrong that I need Imodium as well, but in general it has made my life livable again. I had way to many accidents and urges without it, and no one could seem to help. This works for many I guess and helps your cholesterol so all is good.

I take this too. It’s a game changer. I have one in the morning and one at night and keeps the IBS manageable. I am also on a statin for cholesterol but have stopped this for now. Need to check with my doctor is you can take both.

If I’m going out for the day I take Imodium but also adjust diet and eat much less veg. Also take a spare set of clothing and wear big pads!
