Trapped in the Loo

Hello, I have IBS and diverticular disease. Wondered whether anyone else has my problem I get sudden unexpected bouts of severe cramps with diarrhea which can last around three hours. It's alright being trapped in the loo at home but a nightmare if I am out. How on earth is it possible to deal with being in a loo in a public place for such a great length of time? I am usually fit and active but so anxious about being away from home. I had such a bad bout yesterday evening, was in the loo the whole evening. This has been going on for thirteen years and I feel like I'll never have a normal life again. Any ideas how others cope with similar situation would be welcome. I have all the usual meds and very careful with food.

Hi. Sorry to hear about what you are going through. Have you tried the FODMAP diet?

Thanks for your reply. Yes tried FODMAP but some things made it worse. Main help seems to be a balance between keeping my insides moving, not too little but not too much. Constant attempt at a balancing act..

I have both like you, so I know theres no simple answer. Alverine citrate is good for IBS And diverticulitis cramps. I cut down a lot of veg unfortunately, as this tends to kick in gas, green beans, courgettes ok. High fibre no. Avoid cauli and broccoli, very small portion of baked beans on toast ok. Its a double whammy having both. My doctor calls me a chronic ibs sufferer, which means. I will always have good weeks and bad weeks. But fat remains the big nono. Or cheese. I havent had a chippie for over a year now, causes runs. Good kuck😏

Thank you for reply. Unfortunately Alverine disagreed quite violently with me. Like you am very careful with veg and also tiny portion of baked beans on toast. Alcohol is out as goes straight through me. The good weeks are great though.

Have you been tested for or tried the treatment for Bile Acid Diarrhoea? bad-uk.org

I used to be just like you until this was diagnosed and treated. Many doctors have never heard of it.

Hello, Yes I had the Bile Acid test about a year ago. Got my hopes up but it was negative. I know I was lucky to get the test though as most people don't.

Thanks. A comfort to know I'm not on my own. Menopause as well - that is a nightmare. Thankfully mine is over.
