Hi everyone,Just having a moan as not posted for a while. Last Saturday, I stupidly bought a prepared Chicken Tikka Masala from a supermarket for evening meal. We were looking for something quick and easy to eat. It turned out to be quite spicy and it was tasty. Also had a couple of glasses of wine .
Not been right since , bad flare up. When out on Sunday , had to dash home to loo. A few Loo visits , then Monday I was going to golf , had to abandon that . Not so much D on Monday but felt very nauseous. A little better today but still a bit of a sickly feeling. Gurgling tummy and only left the house for a short walk, as still all a bit iffy .
All probably the result of taking a chance and saying to hell with IBS and safer eating . Now seems like a very bad idea , so as I said just having a moan . I would imagine lots of you will have experienced something similar .
IBS is such a pain !!

I have done that before and been ill for over a week.Every time I feel tempted I remind myself how poorly I was. It’s just not worth it.Gotta be strong.
Thanks for reply and yes I will have to be strong and not be tempted , however, like you I have done this before ,--- sometimes you have to live a little . I was just having a moan as feeling sorry for myself .
Give your tum a chance to settle down. I am sure it will. For us with IBS, we have sensitive tummies, and it can take a few days or maybe a bit more for things to get back on a fairly even keel again.
I know I couldn't dare to eat any kind of curry, chilli, or really much of anything outside of my list of foods that are "okay". If I ever manage a dessertspoonful of chickpeas (peeled chickpeas!!) with my steamed veg, I feel like a winner...or two or three Walnuts. Or more than two lettuce leaves!
I'd say keep your diet as bland as possible for a bit. Eat things like rice, white pasta, white toast, maybe peeled potatoes, no roughage, maybe eat some boiled eggs, lean meat or steamed or baked fish. Light veggies like carrots, green beans, spinach, might be OK, just test it and always steam or cook them until failry soft. Real butter might be okay. It depends on if it suits you.
Stay away from sauces, condiments, spices, flavourings, pepper, (except a bit of salt) cheeses, peels and skins on things, too much fruit (or even fruit at all, depending on how it suits you. Fruits can be quite laxative.), and any veg that you know is dodgy for your tum.
I know the feeling Will. Once in a while I just like to forget about the triggers too. For me, it’s falafel and Thai food. Spicy seared chilli beef. Whatever tastes super spicy. It’s cruel as I know I’m going to suffer. Once in a while, I get away with it, but generally I know as I’m eating if it’s going to be a set back.
Thanks for reply , as you said , generally you know straight away that your insides are not going to be happy . As you said occasionally you get away with it !!
Oh Yes ive been there !!,as you say sometimes it's nice just to throw caution to the wind and go a bit wild ,but as you've found we nearly always pay for it,........but the devil in me says ,do it anyway ,hope you feel better soon x
Thanks for replying , good to know I am not alone and others sometimes just go for it and enjoy the moment. Paying for it afterwards is not so good !! I hate the nauseous feeling I get after urgent trips to the Loo and then how it impacts on other things in life that you then can't do. Anyway , was having a moan . It is odd, I think , how somehow there is some comfort in knowing you are not the only one this happens too .
The thing that distresses me more is a lot of previously safe ready meals are replacing ingredients with cheaper options, so using onion to sweeten dishes for example, and it's becoming a constant requirement to re-check all the ingredient lists before buying. Had this recently with a Sainsbury's pasta meal that I had bought endless times before. To quote Hill Street Blues: "Let's be careful out there!"
Not fair is it?, I shouldn’t eat chocolate but I have a large tin in the cupboard that just says “eat me”, and even though I know it would be a mistake I am really tempted thinking just one won’t hurt .. it will.
Often the trouble with me is I am 100% happy and fine while eating food I know I probably shouldn't have. When it's in my tummy up top, all is well and happy. And will be for hours and hours as it works its way through...
Mine varies , sometimes next morning but other times soon after eating . It is such a nuisance , as it is unpredictable. I think I am over this flare up but no doubt it will happen again . I have noticed that there are even foods which are fine sometimes but cause issues other times .Will1234
IBS doesn't always follow the rules, and I find that sometimes even after safe foods I might get an attack. and sometimes even after foods that might irritate me, I am fine! I am beginning to think a lot of the time IBS does what it wants for some other reason, and it isn't always food related. I have eaten foods that seemed to obviously upset my gut, then another time have eaten the same things and been fine.
I think when we get an attack after safe foods that shouldn;t irritate at all, that attack was going to happen anyway no matter what we did.
I have discomfort at night and sometimes cant sleep and lack of sleep can lead to other problems so try not to eat after 6 pm . Small and often is good for me with high fibre food low salt and fat and no savoury stuff.I also have organic veg and meat if i can. All this is hard to do and i to can go off the rails like you with regret but if i stick to it it can work for me .
Thanks for reply . I had to get up for a bm during the night , yet some say this is not normal with IBS. After evening meal , maybe too large portion, I often have to urgently go and empty . It varies when . Sometimes straight after food , sometimes later in evening and occasionally during the night . A.m.stones just sore with gas but usually relieved by a bm. I often wonder how many others get those symptoms.
It's understandable to sometimes want to take a chance and indulge in something that you know may trigger your IBS symptoms, but it's important to remember that it can have consequences.
As you mentioned, it's likely that the spicy meal and wine triggered your IBS symptoms. It's best to avoid trigger foods and stick to a low-FODMAP diet to prevent future flare-ups. This blog might help you calm an IBS flare up casadesante.com/blogs/diges...
