Worried sick for my 19 year old daughter, for the last 4 months, she’s had bowel changes lots of mucus, red streaks of blood. She had a calprotectin test done and came back 375.

My daughter is very anxious and. This all started at the time she started taking the birth control pill.

Please can anyone advise.

Has your daughter's doctor referred her to a Gastroenterologist or Gastrointestinal doctor or team, for further investigation? Unfortunately, worry and anxiety can increase the inflammation, so the Calprotectin test may be false. Is the blood bright red? or is it dark? If it is bright red, then it is not so much of a problem as it means the blood is fresh and/or from piles, however darker blood comes from further inside the body and needs to be investigated. I would think the next stage will be various and numerous endoscopies to rule out anything sinister, and hopefully come to a diagnosis and happy prognosis. In the meantime tell your daughter to drink plenty of water (at least 2litres per day), stop drinking alcohol and fizzy drinks, stop eating peanuts, sweetcorn, Brussel sprouts and baked beans. Ask her doctor to consider referring her to a dietician for a fodmap diet. Meanwhile, if you have any further questions, please come back to us, on this site, and good luck.

Hi yes she’s been referred to see gastro appointment is May. Blood is red. She said she feels like she needs to sit on the toilet all the time.

I know it sounds weird, but tell her not to sit on the loo for more than ten minutes (unless, of course she is producing something) as this will train her body to follow her lead, rather than she following it.

Hi, I started with ibs when I was 20 yrs old. I lost alot of weight and was in.a lot of pain. The doctor thought at first it was a appendicitis. But know it was ibs . Speak to the doctor about anti spasmodic medication and painkillers. Also either come off the pill or change to a different one. I know from experience it's a very scary condition to have I'm still.scared and I'm 60. It can be managed with diet and medication, but you also.can have bad flare ups. I hope you and your daughter will find this helpful. Look on the bright side it might not be ibs .

It very possible to have high calprotectin readings and still to come back with a diagnosis of IBS rather than anything else. Mine was 329 prior to having a colonoscopy and I still had an IBS diagnosis. In some ways having a slightly elevated reading will mean she will have proper investigations done, so you can be 100% sure. Statistically far far more people come back with an IBS diagnosis than anything else. Mucus is a common symptom in IBS and you can get blood from an irritated gut or fissures and piles (particularly if you are going to the loo a lot). If she has suspected her birth control pill might have been a trigger has she been advised to come off them to see if things settle? In an equal society the opposite gender also have their part to play in birth control and other methods also provide protection against STDs unless she is taking birth control for other reasons like problem periods. Good luck. Hope your daughter gets the diagnosis and treatment that she needs.
