IBD? Stomach pain, acidity, feeling full, feeling constantly hungry, nausea? Treatments?

Hi all,

I've never been officially diagnosed with IBS, however, my doctor shared it as possible diagnosis a while ago (oh, and after 2 years I still don't have diagnosis, apart from - it's stress).

Long story short:

-I'm in my 20's

-Always been a tall, skinny built (never been able to gain weight)

-In the past 2 years I lost 5kg (which brought me from being underweight, to very underweight)

-mind you- i've been "underweight" my whole life, but it's due to genes and fast metabolism

-I lost 5kg due to developing daily nausea and feeling full very quickly after meals

-I've switched to having more smaller meals a day

-Eating calorie rich foods, that are not too fatty or oily (otherwise my stomach get's acidy and I get nauseous).

-Endoscopy (camera via mouth in stomach) was performed- no serious abnormalities, only that the esophageal sphincter doesn't always close properly, therefor could cause acid reflux)

-I've tried quite some different medicines for helping the stomach lining and nausea. No breakthroughs though...

-I've adjust my diet to help- no spicy foods, no acid, avoid fatty, acidy. No alcohol, don't smoke

-Currently, after 2 years my stomach & intestines are all over the place-I wake up feeling full but have stomach ache. During the day I can feel hungry no matter how much I eat. Suddenly nausea kicks in.

-I've been trying to use pro-biotica, in hopes that it could help, but doesn't look like it will.

Do you have any suggestions, experiences how to normalise this? I'm really running out of options and just want to take care of my body and well-being.

Thanks in advance.

How much water or other liquid do you drink per day? Are your motions "normal"?

Hi, I try to make sure to drink at least 2l or liquid (water or light tea infusion, with ginger). And regarding my motions- well, I avoid spinning, fast movements etc. If that is what you mean :)

sorry I don’t have any suggestions - I’m currently on the same path (slim, feeling full, nausea) as you trying to figure out why I’m suffering and what triggers it - but I just wanted to send a message of support. I hope your symptoms improve. When I have a regular routine of staying active during the day and sleeping consistently, I tend to suffer less. Best of luck x

I don’t know about the nausea, but you could try the silent reflux diet in Dropping Acid by Dr Jamie Koufman. Silent reflux is widely underdiagnosed and I find this diet, together with low FODMAP, really helps with my IBSD. Good luck!

Hello.Just want to check you have been tested for helicobacter pylori. It would match all your symptoms especially nausea and feeling full very quickly.I had it many years ago and lost a lot of weight which I could ill afford .Best wishes to you.

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. I was indeed tested for the helicobactery more than a year ago, by using the stool, and it came back negative. I have heard that it’s not the most effective test option though. Apparently a breath test is more accurate, but not sure about it.

You mention that your oesophageal sphincter doesn't always close properly, therefore could cause acid reflux; and that you feel nauseous and full quickly. You do not say which meds you have tried, but perhaps GP should give you Omeprazole as this will help reduce the acid in your stomach and prevent it from coming up into your oesophagus . You may need a couple of weeks of slightly higher dose then normal dose for a couple of weeks... I had very similar to your symptoms a few years ago and at the time also had an endoscopy as well as a scan showing irritation in my gullet. Omeprazole did help to reduce acidity and in turn this helped the nausea - since then I have used it a few times over the years on an as an when basis for a few weeks and it has always helped. If you do not control the acid coming up you could get silent reflux (happened to me 2019 due to lots of stress and not at the time taking meds) and this is not something you want as the acidity ends up in your larynx and in my case I lost my voice for a month (had other unpleasant symptoms too...)

Lots of foods do trigger more acidity and I think many people have IBS and acid reflux so best bet is to revisit your GP.. Good luck!

Forgot to mention in my post that it may be worth taking Gaviscon Advance (has to be the Advance version) bought over the counter which the consultant I saw when I had silent reflux (and GP could not diagnose me) suggested alongside meds.. to this day, I still take 2 x 5ml at night (after cleaning teeth) and it really does help.

Have you tried herbs like fenugreek? They are quite good at naturally fixing nausea and increasing appetite. They can help with stomach acne. Also moringa powder taken separately to the fenugreek may help clear the stomach acne too!

Also, slippery elm is known to help with acid reflux! I would probably recommend this one the most!

It sounds as if you are habitually anxious. So am I. If you are, IBS can cause everything you describe--call it nerves, anxiety, etc. They say it is a diagnosis of last resort--but 1 in 55 people ultimately die of colon cancer--more than half over 75. One in five to seven has chronic IBS with CPPS/Fibromyalgia and similar anxiety named disorders... call it GAD--generalized anxiety. It is real--it causes physical symptoms and there is no magic pill--though SSRIs were a life changer for me. If your father or mother had anxiety--your odds more than double. Can it cause weight loss? Yes. Sense of fulness--yes. Can it be mistaken for a horrible cancer? Yes. What are the odds of that? Pretty low. Cancer rarely presents with pain--less than 10% of the time. It usually doesn't cause lingering symptoms for years--especially pain. Pain is an advanced sign and usually quite progressive. Is it always so? Nothing is always so. Doctors play the odds all the time. So must we all. Risk exists. We are never fully safe. The anxious live in a sort of hell of uncertainty.... it can be turned down... chemically and emotionally. It is a lifelong battle. You will have good and bad days/months, etc. if that is you. You may also get cancer--but fewer than 1/2 of all people EVER do get cancer. The vast majority of cancer--over 70%--happens to people over 65. If you don't smoke or drink, you odds are even much better--probably 1 in 3 lifetime risk or so.
