Hello, does anyone find it helpful to take Imodium to prevent diarrhoea if going out? Or would you recommend taking anything else as a preventative?

hi free fall

I’ve been taking Imodium daily forb10 yrs with no side effects. My GP said it is a long term drug that has no adverse effects but gives me peace of mind. I have a busy life and it allows me to live my life without the fear of accidents. I also take alflorex daily follow FODMAP to a certain extent but making sure I have fiber but only soluable fiber. Following this regime seems to work but obviously now and again ( especially holidays) there has been a couple of emergencies where I’ve needed to be near toilets. This has usually been down to the fact the food is different and not as aware what’s in it. 😏

Hi, thank you for your reply. I wonder how effective it is as prevention taken occasionally and whether it might trigger constipation.

I also take it daily for many years. 1/2 pill daily BUT if I know I am going to be in a stressful situation with bathrooms in unknown locations I take an additional full pill prior. Usually a few hours before I leave. Works for me.

Note Imodium takes time to work....even the 'instant' formulation. I take half a tablet an hour before a day out. It slows everything down. You may need a full 2mg tablet. It was trial and error for me. A full tablet messed up my gut for a day.Agree with flannels about the fibre. I take Fybogel twice a day and that has helped me enormously. Since taking Fybogel I need less loperamide/imodium

Thank you for your reply, maybe I’ll give half a tablet try. What actually happened to your gut after taking a whole one?

Stomach cramps. Constipation ☹

Sounds awful. That’s what I’m concerned about.

It is fine to take Imodium as and when; I have IBS and IBD and my gastroenterologist supports this view if need be. It is in my case sometimes taken as a precaution if I know I will be going somewhere that may mean I cannot instantly find a toilet! I have been caught short a couple of times and it is so awful if this happens....,I find it does slow everything down but the next day I am fine.

Hi, I take Immodium before I go out for a spicy meal or one with a creamy sauce. I used to have accidents but not anymore. It is a very safe medication.

I take imodium just in case GP advised it. I only need 1/2 a tablet unless I am having a flare up. I tested the dosage while I was only out local and not too far from home to see what effect it had on my stomach. It was ok, it did cause a bit of constipation but it seemed worth it just to know I can use it if needed

I have IBS D and have also been advised by consultant gastroenterologist that I can take Imodium during flare ups or if I’m travelling and/or eating out. They help but i find they mess with my system and then I can’t go to the toilet for a day or two. I am coeliac so food in general is an ongoing nightmare. I recently had a colonoscopy which came back all clear. I was advised that I should reduce or remove all high fibre foods which has certainly helped.

Ok thanks that’s helpful. Good that your colonoscopy was clear.

That’s interesting I was “ lucky “ to be kept in hospital for check ups on my IBS. One of the things that came up was I was eating too healthily 🙄 too much muesli, fruit , etc. I wasn’t having enough calories. You can’t win. Lopermide/ Imodium Inst bad for you but in my case makes me constipated quickly

I’ve just been trying a drug called Prochlorperazine it’s actually an anti nausea drug very effective for me but as always a side effect. Makes me really sleepy and lethargic.

My GP says keep with them that will reduce but I’m sure they just say that in case

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I broke my wrist last Christmas and was on several strong painkillers following my operation and was so “happy” as my BM’s were completely normal!! Rather drastic and not recommended.

My gastroenterologist also said most people don’t eat enough fibre etc and my body didn’t need a high fibre healthy diet but I could add little now and again.,
