I was diagnosed with PV (red blood) and ET (platelets) in 2014, at 57 years young. I'm a male. The first year was rough, but once doctors got my medications "tuned" things have been great since. In HIPPOCRATES'' DAY, phlebotomy (blood letting) was the accepted cure for many of the short list of common illnesses or injures which were known and treated.. In the PRESENT DAY the modern doctor has many more decisions to make and factors to consider.

My HGB started at 22 and with weekly phlebotomy and the 500 mg HU it had gone down steadily to 18 over 4 weeks. However, today at phlebotomy my HGB was up to 18.5. Also, my WBC is up and it had been steady. Is this common to see swings like this? Thanks for reading this!

Seems one treatment is regular blood removal by phlebotomy. Anyone on here had similar condition? Thanks

But what I can't grasp is why some people are only on aspirin and phlebotomy and others take other medicine. Can I ask what it was that moved you to extra treatment and how long had you been diagnosed? Thanks.

In the mean time no doctor started phlebotomy treatments and my iron has been high and Oct 2016 iron was 300. Still no help or treatments. Since I've been sick as of December 23 2016. My symptoms have gotten worse. Here ya go. Sugar is out of wack.

They included phlebotomy, chemo, life expectancy etc. I was totally stunned when I saw this brought out in a soap opera. The rareness of PV and it being a cancer was also detailed along with the ability to manage it. This was wonderful to see PV brought to nation wide attention.

The phlebotomy stuff wouldn't be an issue anyway as I'm a nurse so could get someone to take blood. It's just some of the similar tests offered by others are so expensive!

I am on Hydrea, have been for some years now, and have not needed phlebotomy for a couple of years, although the haematocrit remains steady (between 40 and 45%). I am not sure whether I should just adapt to how I feel and concentrate on walking exercise, or whether I should push myself to do more.

I had blood tests at private hospital when I saw the endocrinologist privately and they charged me £157 for the phlebotomy and three blood tests. Looks like I will have to pay this again if I want to see what is actually going on with my blood levels. Grr.

but after reading some blogs i am concerned that the hematologist flatly refuses to administer a phlebotomy even though my platelet count is high. my hematacrit is between 45 and 47.

PCV has risen to 47 and I am now having a phlebotomy every 6 weeks or so to keep it below 45. Back in 1985 I had two small children and I just got lucky that I did not have any kind of thrombosis. My girls would have suffered without their Dad.?

I had my fourth phlebotomy ten days ago. Hemoglobin over 14. First time at a hospital. Usually I go to One Blood, which is a donation site. Never had a problem there. They remove the blood by gravity, takes about 25 minutes. I feel fine after.
