The Other Breast

Good morning Ladies,

I’m in a bit of a “tizzy”. I had a right mastectomy in Oct because the cancer there was Her2 - and it was growing again after I stopped taxotere. I now have only 3 small her2+ places in my left lung that I’m about to have sbrt on one of them. I’ve been on herceptin and perjeta for her2+ and it’s been under control. Well last night my left breast started hurting and I thought I felt something. This morning I’m not sure because if it is it’s really close to the nipple. Have any of y’all had it spread from one breast to the other? Is that common? I pray it’s only my imagination running wild with me. Please me know what you might know on this.

Thanks,

Stacy

Hello Staysha. My breast cancer also started under my right nipple. It was good at hiding from the mammograms until my nipple started to invert. By that time it had spread to my lympnodes and down my spine at a Stage IV of course. I chose to do a double mastectomy and a Hysterectomy to try to get ahead of those sneaky cancer cells. When the Drs did my double mastectomy sure enough the found small cells in the other one. I never or do I ever intend to be bad news or try to scare you. My post is to tell anyone if they have suspicion to have it checked out and do not wait and hopefully it will be good news. I believe we all are paranoid about everything thing that we feel now for good cause. But, it's your right to be concerned and have your mind put to ease either way. Talk to your oncologist and tell her you need to know for sure nothing's wrong. I pray for you that it is nothing and all will be well.

Love to you sister..💞

Thank you for responding. I have a follow up with my surgeon on feb 3 and I’m going let him see if he feels anything. I should’ve went ahead and had both of them off but they all said there was no need. They didn’t really want to take the one because I was already stage 4 but because it had different receptors that gave in to me. I’m hoping I’m just paranoid.

Remember that lady Holly Kitchen (you can google her video). She had breast cancer, chemo, rad, the whole bit and was told she was clear. Then she got stage iv. She had had both of her breasts removed. She said she assumed no breasts meant no breast cancer but she was wrong. Anyway, she did a video, using cards to explain the situation, the wrong things to say, the misconception that having no breasts meant no breast cancer. It is a moving video.

My friend had stage ii in one breast and immediately freaked out and wanted both her breasts taken off. Her breast surgeon tried to reassure her that that was not necessary and was overkill but she insisted so he took both of them off.

A lady on another board had both breasts removed when about 20 years ago. Chemo, radiation and yet 20 years later she was having pain and they found cancer mets in her liver. The odd thing is that she has three sisters. Besides herself, her two of her sisters also developed breast cancer, one at stage one and the other at stage ii. They were all tested (since one sister did not get it), but they were found NOT to have the gene that causes breast cancer.

Angeline Jolie's mother died early from breast cancer. She got tested and found she had the gene mutation and it was almost 80% that she would get breast cancer. With all the kids she has, she decided to be proactive and her both her breasts removed and goes for regular checkups. that is a different scenario because they found the gene so it was almost guaranteed she would get breast cancer.

Wishing you the best with your decision.

Thank you for the info. I have Mets to my lung but it has different receptors than what was in my breast. It has been under control so I have a feeling this I’m feeling now may be like it was originally. Uggg. It’s so disappointing and depressing. I hope I’m over reacting. I was tested for the gene and was negative. I’m going to look up Holly.

I’ve read that it is not common to have breast cancer in both breasts unless you have lobular cancer or have the BRCA mutation. That is why doctors prefer doing a single mastectomy instead of a double. It’s good to check with the doctor, though.

Hi Staysha! Yes unfortunately it can go from side to side. Mine did 🙈...but treatment stays the same as long as it is Her2+ still...

My breast cancer was her 2 neg but Mets to my lung is her2 positive. My lung Mets seems to be under control with perjeta herceptin regimen. That’s why I feel like if what I’m feeling is cancer it’s prob the her2 neg. 🙁 I pray it’s nothing and I’m getting worked up over nothing. Thank you for responding. Just having someone to talk to about it is a comfort.
