Magnesium and RLS

I am a 74 y/o male in Toronto Canada and have had RLS for several years. One topic I am pursuing right now is magnesium . I am reading "The Magnesium Miracle" by Carolyn Dean MD, ND. It is an extremely thorough analysis of this element. Dr. Dean has developed "ReMag" a magnesium supplement which offers "pico" particles of Mg so that it is absorbed more readily than other magnesium supplements. As well, it does not have the same laxative effect that many other Mg supplements have. Low Mg levels are implicated in many other conditions as well. I recommend this book very highly!

Just be sure if you are taking gabapentin or pregabalin that you take the magnesium at least 3 hours before you take them as the magnesium can interfere with their absorption.

Is this the same as magnesium l-threonate? The one that crosses the blood/brain barrier.

Interesting. Magnesium citrate has greatly reduced my RLS over the years so not surprised to read this.

I have been using various magnesium for years. I started using it for migraines and it was a miracle. Unfortunately it didn’t help my restless legs.

When I do get restless legs in the evening I spray my legs with magnesium oil and within 20 minutes they are still.

To conclude the tablets don’t work for me put the spray works once I have got restless legs but it doesn’t prevent it from happening.

The magnesium oil does not help my legs settle down. But I think we can be so minutely different that those with RLS just have to keep trying and keeping a diary of what seems to may have caused help or hinderance. I've been trying anything to see if it helps, and nothing so far. I've come to the conclusion that I'm just going to have to live with it. I've prayed for healing and still waiting.

Are you taking any medications for your RLS? You don't have to suffer and just live with it. Gabapentin helps most people with RLS and can completely control ones symptoms. And for those it doesn't there are other things one can try. Have you had your ferritin checked? If so, what was it. If it is below 100 improving it to 100 or more helps 60% of patients and in some will completely eliminate their symptoms. Try adding Benfotiamine with your magnesium to activate the thiamine for it to clear lactic acid that may offer additional control for RLS. Also search on "Benfotiamine fibromyalgia"as it offers other benefits and for the eyes as well. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement.

I’ve had RLS all my life and I’ve tried everything. The only thing that helped me was a prescription for Ropinirole 1mg at bedtime. I hope this helps.

Ropinirole is a trap, it is good for a few months but very bad in the long term. DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO USE IT, and see the multitude of information here against this drug and others from the family of Dopamine Agonists.

Well I’ve been taking it for over two years now and it’s the only thing that I’ve found that help’s stop the constant moving in my leg’s. I’ve actually had restless arm syndrome, if it’s even a thing. That’s when I sought out help besides everything I’d already tried. I hope you find help because it’s a horrible thing to afflict you night after night.

Magnesium deficiency in diet is apparently very common and leads to all sorts of problems including - for some of us - RLS.

Iron supplementation was ineffective in my mild to moderate RLS, which started at least 40 years ago. I was recommended to boost Magnesium 10-15 years ago: I tried Oxide and oil first which were both ineffective, before finding Citrate which has helped hugely.

In my view, reading this forum, far too many people get put on prescription drugs for RLS too early: checking drugs used for other maladies for RLS side effects; mineral supplementation - both iron and magnesium; diet changes to cut down on inflammatory foods; changes in exercise levels; all should be trialled exhaustively before taking any prescription drugs for RLS.

I realise that this doesn't help sufferers who have already been put on the treadmill of drugs and augmentation and I'm very sorry for that.
