Rituximab is used to treat blood cancers like non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia by helping the immune system fight cancer cells. It’s also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis and occasionally other conditions like ITP. It’s given as an injection through the veins, often in cycles of a few injections over a few weeks, so patients have to travel to a clinic each time. It’s from a new family of drugs called ‘monoclonal antibodies’.
