Here are some tips for preparing for Stoptober, the campaign to quit smoking in October:

• Set a quit date: Pick a date and add it to your calendar.

• Make a list: Write down your reasons for quitting, and any smoking triggers you have.

• Tell people: Let friends and family know you're quitting, or join an online community.

• Have a plan: Make a plan for what to do if you feel tempted to smoke.

• Use aids: Try stop smoking aids to help manage cravings.

• Exercise: Physical activity can help you feel better and give you another focus.

• Keep busy: Distractions can help keep cravings at bay. You can try keeping your hands busy, changing your routine, or going for walks.

• Remember what worked: If you've tried to quit before, think about what helped you last time.

The Stoptober campaign is based on the idea that starting with a realistic goal of 28 days smoke-free can help people achieve a more difficult behavioral goal.

Once you have picked your quit date, remember to add it to your calendar.

• List your reasons to quit.

• Tell people you're quitting.

• If you have tried to quit before, remember what worked.

• Use stop smoking aids.

• Have a plan if you are tempted to smoke.

• List your smoking triggers and how to avoid them.
