Hi Lyndelou, before we can advise on the next best step forward for you, there are a couple of things we need to understand first.... How many do you smoke each day? What types of NRT have you used before? How have they worked for you? When do you smoke the most, morning, afternoon or evening? Which cigarette do you think you will find hardest to give up? What is your main reason for wanting to quit smoking?

Once we understand a little bit more about how when and why you smoke, then the more help we can give you.

Health is a fantastic reason for giving up smoking as the benefits that you gain will be priceless. To help reach this success, evidence shows that if you plan your quit attempt then you are more likely to stay stopped longer. Also, if you use a form of NRT as well as recieve ongoing support, such as from your local stop smoking service or from us here, then you are 4 times more likely to stay stopped.

Take time to make sure that you are physically, mentally and emotionally ready and plan how and when you will give up. Once you have this in mind then you are almost there!

You say that you have used all types of NRT, as a 20 a day smoker who smokes more in the morning, have you tried the 24 hour patch rather than the 16 hour? If not, this may be the way forward. However, I would also recommend that you plan to change your routine slightly in the morning. For example, if you smoke as soon as you get up, try getting a shower first.

It sounds as though you really do want to stop so just stay positive and keep up the attempt!

5 months is brilliant!

What led you to setting a quit date that time? If you can remember all the positives from then and use them to motivate you this time round then you're onto a winner. On a scale of 1-10, one being difficult, ten being really easy, how confident do you feel in your ability to stop smoking even though your husband may choose to continue to smoke?

How about we try and help you to get motivated and plan towards a quit date? You say you are confident but not yet ready to stop, when would you like to be quit by? Within the month, within 6 months or by Christmas? Have a little think about your reasons for wanting to stop and we can plan this together... How does that sound?

Hi Lyndelou, Easter Monday sounds like a great day to stop. The 9th April is just under 4 weeks away... Perfect time for planning.

Sometimes it is useful if you start to learn to understand what it is you enjoy and get out of smoking.

I would suggest the following for this week;

1. Don't worry about stopping smoking but become really aware of each cigarette that you smoke. What do you believe you really enjoy about it?

2. Next, without trying to stop, I want you to go for as long as you can without smoking. However when you feel that the craving is too much, I want you to really think about what it is that you are feeling... Does it feel physical? Is it in your tummy? In your chest? Does your mouth water? Does it feel more in your mind? Like you can't concentrate? Feeling a bit tense? Upset?

3. When you feel that you can't take anymore of this awful feeling, go and get your cigarettes.

4. Notice at which point does any part of this action take that awful feeling away. You may feel better once you pick up your cigarette packet,, without even having to light your cigarette. The feeling may go when you take the first puff in, maybe when you blow it out. The feeling may not even go until you have finished smoking and put your cigarette out.

Only you will ge able to recognise and answer any of the above for yourself. Once we/you discover this, then we can work on the next step together....

You have the support that enables you to do this, and you can!

Hi Lyndelou,

I hope you are enjoying the beginning of the Eater celebrations. It's been a couple of weeks now since we heard from you and we were wondering how you are getting on. Hope all is well....
