Hi All,

I quit on 1st June 2017 so I am on day 9.

I have tried and failed in the past, on the 1st day usually but this time I was ready and wanted to quit.

It was very hard on days 1 and 2 but feel much better now and I am so glad that there is a place like this, I have read posts every day but decided to post myself today.

A quick question, my gums are really sore is this a side effect of giving up???

Hi well done on staying strong and yes having problems with sore and bleeding gums is a common effect when stopping smoking - your blood supply is getting back there - it is normal and will settle down xxx stay strong xx

Welcome bladegirl. First of all well done on 9 days smoke free , just Fantastic. Yes bleeding and sore gums is a common symptom when quitting, took about 6 months for mine to settle down , but everyone is different. Try a soft brush and swill with warm salt water or corsodyle. That worked for me. The first thing I did was go the dentist for a clean which also helped . Have a read of the pinned posts as some useful information to help you on your quit. Stay strong ,. It will get better

Are you going cold turkey, I did and it was really hard at first, but well worth it now as it gets better after the 1st week.

I can't believe it's been 9 days already, my husband gave up with me, we were smoking away 800 pounds a month.

That is what keeps me going :)

That is definitely one huge incentive... Wish my husband would quit as well... But I can not make him, he needs to want it for himself... Just happy that he is being very supportive.

Hi Bladegirl - and welcome to our lovely forum! Yes gum problems are very very common - myself included - all part of recovery! Drink plenty of water and see your dentist for advice if they are really sore - some Bonjela or similar might help? Jax :)

Hi there

Well done for trying cold turkey. I was not brave enough for that! Am using 15mg nicotine patches on advice of health clinic. Hope that doesn't mean I get addicted to patches instead of cigarettes!

No shame in using patches, it's not just the nicotine in cigarettes it's the 4000 or so other poisons that you won't we putting in while using patches.

You're still having to break the habits with the patches because it's about habits as much as anything, you still need to keep your hands busy, and when you give up the patches you will have done a lot of the hard work already!!!

Hi, way to go!! Stay strong!! Holly

Well done Blade the first week for me was the hardest so congratulations! My gums have just started calming down, though I still get some bleeding when brushing my teeth, it's lessening though so hopefully that'll stop soon. When you put it in money terms it's pretty shocking, working it out I think I was smoking more away that my mortgage actually is (houses are cheap round her so that's not that much but still) So technically could probably have paid off half a house by now with that money :(

You don't realise at the time just how much you spend every week, Husband smoked Silk Cut and they are now over 10 pounds a packet!!!!

He smoked 1 and a 1/2 packets a day!!!!!

I smoked roll ups but even so we couldn't afford a holiday or anything and my husband has a well paid job!!!!

Welcome Bladgirl... I am right with you on many accounts... Coming here has really helped me over the craving hurdles so far... Good luck and congrats on giving up the smokes.
