Super vitamins

piglette profile image

I cannot believe it, I have just come across a super new vitamin pill costing between 149 pounds sterling up to over seven hundred pounds for 180 days supply. Its main asset is that it is contained in rather an attractive copper pill box. The pill has turmeric, vitamin D, vitamin K etc etc and presumably one ingredient that contains the elixir of life for that price. I suppose they are relying on the placebo effect. I forgot to say the pills are gold!!

Perhaps I can, as I won thirty pounds on the lottery yesterday. Just realised that is not enough!!

If you’ve only just worked out £30 is not enough, think you need a quick maths lesson… 😳..

Although no doubt some will think its a must have - hope box also contains a reality check.

And to think for A Level I did Pure Maths, Applied Maths, Further Maths and Advanced Maths. Perhaps I should have done Arithmetic!

That would have been a plus

I did most of those too and a fair bit at university. I'm hopeless at arithmetic! I had a mental block for years that I'm just getting over in my 70s. If I do anything in my head I usually ask my husband if I'm right 😀😃😄

Mind you people will spend a thousand dollars on a Champagne cocktail. timeout.com/melbourne/news/...

I can understand that…but that’s not to say I can afford it, but I can understand it. 🍾🍸

I think they are mad. You usually get some gold leaf nestling on top which looks awful and has no taste, a total waste of money. Give me wine and chocolate any day!

Wiki says it has anti inflammatory properties when mixed with wine and ‘the ancients’ used it as an analgesia…,, make mine a large one 😉

Unbelievable. Sadly some people are desperate. I am worried about all the unregulated herbal and vitamin market who make great claims without all the double blind testing made by the pharma companies. It is easy to make the big boys into the bad guys but in most cases they are very risk adverse and careful.

They aren't so much unregulated, but the system is different. Most supplements are sold under food legislation and don't need the prior approval that are required for medicines, but when it comes to claims, they are still governed by food advertising regs and they are not allowed to make medicinal claims, or the MHRA will come down on them like a ton of bricks for selling an unlicensed medicine. Though I do agree with you that the mechanism for monitoring claims often seems to be inadequate and a lot of the dodgy supplements that appear on the UK market, originated in the US, where there is a different system again. They are monitored, but enforcement action often only takes place following complaints from commercial competitors, or members of the public.

One of the various hats that I wore in my professional life was supplement legislation and advertising regs for both medicines and supplements. It's hard to switch off now that I am retired. I often see ads and think, they can't do that! I would be interested to see the ad that piglette saw to see how they justify the price; I bet there are some pretty expansive claims.

Many years ago I worked at RPSGB and often visited big pharma manufacturers, they were all in fear of visits from MHRA and had ultimate respect for them.

ha yes! They would have. An unsuccessful MHRA inspection could close you down. :)

A fool and his money is soon parted, as they say.

Though I suppose that when people are desperate, they will try anything, and that is exploitation.

How much do pills weigh?? X

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply toPoshdog

Are you thinking of getting them, and melting down to make a profit on the gold markets!?

Not sure how many you'd need to get a gram 😼- always remembering the following -

Gold is weighed in the troy measurement system. One ounce of gold is not the same as the ordinary ounce (really called avoirdupois ounce).

Gold Price per Gram €59.49 $65.09 £51.29

There’s bound to be someone with more money than sense who’s gullible enough to buy them 🙄
