struggling with meds

Id really like some advice from the kind people on here as cannot get to speak to my GP and i think rheumatology at my local hospital are getting a bit fed up with my constant questions.

Ive put what Id like to know in numbered points so if you cannot answer one maybe you can another one.

Be v helpful to me if you number what youre replying to.

Many, many thanks.

Here goes-

PMR since March 2021, reduced v slowly from 15 to 12 pred. my body not liking it at all.

been put on adcal which is giving me mild stomach pains so am only taking one tablet a day instead of 2.

have refused omeprazole because under normal circumstances my stomach is quite strong and was ok until i started the adcalD3.

taking also thyroxine daily (no probs with this).

dexa scan scores showed osteoporosis in 2 places and borderline in another place.

taking risedronate once weekly for bone protection

and starting this friday Azathioprine which is a steroid sparer.

my questions are this

1) my calcium levels are good, would it be ok to stop the adcal and just keep taking lots of calcium rich foods and buy a ViT D supplement instead?

2) is there any alternative to the risedronate? ie what would happen to my bones if I stopped it? will the density get worse or can i help that myself by walking lots and doing weight bearing exercises.

as you can prob gather im not a fan of medication nor is my body.

im dreading already what the azathioprine is going to do to me.

thanks

Hi Changemelater. Not much in your profile so please fill in . Nothing on how you feel physically or how you are since dropping. Only PMR not GCA as well so are you reacting to other meds. or flare?. Don't know about your meds as don't take them. Others will advise. Adcal for bone health has to be weighed against side effects. As to improving bone density and strength I would say it depends upon age, fitness capability to do serious physical exercise if you want to promote bone rejuvenation through muscles working over bone. Takes effort and consistent work. Slower than drugs and takes longer the older we get. You already have some areas weaker but have no idea whetether that's good or bad. Diet works but again is slower. I refused AA because I knew my bones were healthy to start with. Will have a dexascan soon so maybe that has changed since these last 3 months of pred. I'll see. hope that helps a bit

Hi, As cycli has said a bit more info would be helpful, but in reply to your specific questions -

1). You can stop Adcal if it upsets stomach. You may be able to get Calcium citrate if the calcium carbonate is the issue.

2). There are other Bisphosphonates, but not sure where you live, but in UK Alendronic Acid is usually first choice.
