Alternatives to Adcal

Hi

I responded badly to Adcal and my GP said there would be enough calcium in my diet. I take vitD and K2 plus multi vitamin daily and I’m on 8mgs Pred. However, I’ve been on a bio-sulphate for over three years and want to stop. Any suggestions as to another kind of calcium I could take? Thanks!

My husband now uses a calcium citrate after disastrous effects with calcium carbonate. Not cheap! I'd had to ditch the calcium carbonate after several years of no problems and then constant bladder irritation but had struggled to get calcium citrate until the local osteoporosis expert told us what to get but I decided it was a bit expensive for both of us and he NEEDS it.

In fact, my dexascan elicited exclamations of surprise that anyone could have that good a dexascan after 11 years on pred so I've stopped worrying - it had gone down a bit and I thought she'd be handing out the AA! I do like cheese and since a 100g ball of mozarella in a tomato, mozarella and basil salad is 3/4 of the RDA and a decent chunk of Parmesan is a third of the requirement per ounce I will spend it on more cheese which fits well in my low carb approach to eating ;)

I didn’t get on with Adcal at all and high dose citrate version wasn’t much better. I just took a low dose and hoped that the VitD and K2 along with diet would be sufficient.

I take a seaweed based calcium tablet - not particularly cheap - but much better than AdCal which I had to give up after developing kidney stones. This is much more easily absorbed than AdCal. My GP advised that I should be getting enough calcium from my diet but I want to be certain. I also take 3000iu Vit D and K2 tablets each day.

My Mum had a bad response to Adcal and was switched to Phosex which is Calcium Acetate and separate D3 and appears to be fine.
