I have seen a post here on the forum that ibuprofen is contra-indicated for use with prednisolone but this does not appear on the data sheet information of either drug.
Has anyone with PMR any experience of using topic... - PMRGCAuk
Has anyone with PMR any experience of using topical (rub on the skin) pain relief, such as Ibuleve or Deep Heat?
It's my understanding that taking NSAIDS internally along with pred can cause a stomach bleed. However, my GP said that it wouldn't do any harm to use the gel topically and I sometimes use diclofenac gel on tendonitis related to use of pred.
I have found ibuprofen gel and deep heat quite useless but Biofreeze gel does hep my pains. It gives a feeling of coldness, which stops the pain being felt.
I use Biofreeze spray on pain areas, and it helps. Order it online.
Biofreeze is good for temporary relief, and cold will work a tiny bit on the inflammation, but do note that you should only use it up to 3 - 4 times daily. I have the roll-on as well, as with that if you are out somewhere you can apply without having to get it on your hands.
Just to add to my previous post: Voltarol Gel (Diclofenac) is, in my experience, good for small areas but for things like backache which covers a wide area, not so effective. Ignore those TV ads that show a lively old couple soothing backache with Voltarol!
I use Icy Hot, which is a similar product, when the pain gets too much. It helps me tolerate it.
The doc gave me "Phorpain" gel which is 10% Ibuprofen Gel, stronger than the normal. I understood that oral Ibuprofen irritates the stomach as do steroids so best avoided (tho I have occasionally succumbed)
It won't say ibuprofen - it says NSAIDs and pred together should be avoided because both cause gastric problems on their own and together it is even worse. Topical gels are better but using too much over too large an area for too long can also lead to problems as it is absorbed into the blood.
Very useful replies, thank you! Why don't drs tell patients topical rubs can be useful! Any relief is so welcome!
