Has anyone had similar symptoms?

It all started at the beginning of July..I went to a spa and had a chemical reaction. I was wrongly told to use a steroid cream and thrush pessary and cream and not long after using these I developed pain inside my vagina and a feeling of a full bladder. The pain inside would flare up and down and felt raw. All my swabs and UTI tests came back clear and nobody could tell me what was causing it. I went to a Urogynocologyst who straight away thought it was nerve pain and that it was something inbetween Vulvodynia (although I have no pain on the outside only in) or Pelvic pain syndrome or pudendal neuropathy. I have been prescribed Amitriptyline and I’m being told I will stay on it for 3/4 months to let the nerves settle and hopefully I can wean off them slowly. I am pain free on them but I still have discomfort in my vagina and it’s irritating my bladder. Has anyone had anything and could offer any advice? Many thanks

I can't offer anything re your condition except that some people do get a bad reaction to one of the internal pessaries prescribed for thrush. However the amitriptyline was prescribed by a pain doctor when my son had very bad nerve pain - trigeminal neuralgia. He explained it this way - when nerves are irritated they become ultra sensitive and and can continue to fire even long after original stimulus has gone. You need to calm the nerves down so that they can "forget" the pain. He took the amitriptyline same way that you have been prescribed for a few weeks and then gradually reduced the dose and came off it. Pain was gone. I hope you get the same relief. Best regards.

Oh thanks so much for your reply! This is exactly the positive story I needed to read :) This is exactly what my specialist thinks and has prescribed me the amitriptyline for so I’m hoping I will be the same. I definitely think it’s the thrush pessary that’s caused it. Thanks so much, your reply has helped a lot.

Go to sexual health clinic and get some vaginal and urethral swabs done in case some kind of infection. You will get an appointment quickly.

They are very used to seeing all sorts of things in the clinic, you may have a different sort of infection which they can test for. Maybe spa chemicals changed the pH of your vagina and you have some other problem.

I am certain they will help you.

Good luck and hope you feel better really quickly with correct treatment.

Keep drinking well also to flush out any urine infections.

Be good to hear how it all goes

Just to say amitryptiline is very good for lots of different areas of nerve pains around the body....and any infection can cause pain but obviously once treated it will clear up.Pain does have a function, it tells us something is not right but left untreated it can become chronic and pain memory can continue long after we heal or the problem has been dealt with.

hi Louise, I’m also called Louise! (Nic my middle name) I had a very similar experience. A thrush pessary (from France that was very strong) that caused burning, a few UTIs, then symptoms never went away - 4 months later but no infection. Pain is inside for me too not outside - burning stinging itching. I’m fed up now and will try medication so that’s great you said it works - but you also say you still have irritation in your vagina? What is that exactly if the amitriptyline worked?
