Hi,

I hope someone can help. So at the moment I am on the reintroduction stage of the low fodmap diet . I am always constipated and unfortunately I am suffering pain at the moment which could be due to a no. Of my different issues ., the only pain relief that is on offer to me that works is codeine and due to some of my conditions it’s dangerous for me to become severely constipated which is exactly what codeine does to me . So my question is can I take laxatives without compromising the diet.

I am not sure for on the strict adherence to the diet but I was told I could take Miralax for constipation when I was on the diet if needed but I never had to. The main thing the doctor and PT suggested was adding psyllium capsules until I could get my stools within a good range - soft formed. I could use the powder form but I preferred the capsule. It works great for me. I now take psyllium capsules 610 mg each 3 times a day. Seems like a lot but that is what works. The diet really helped me get my Microscopic Interstitial colitis (which reacts much like IBS-D under control. The diet helped me identify foods that caused me to flare and now I am back on my low carb diet with those foods eliminated or seldom used. Tomatoes other than cherry tomatoes and asparagus are no-no’s for me. There are a few more but mostly things I don’t normally eat anyway. We are all different!

Also regarding alleviating constipation without laxatives: FiberOne cereal has 10 grams dietary fiber per serving. I also found raw carrots very helpful and tasty. Remember to drink a lot of water. Daily habits have effects.

Miralax is great if u can stand in prune juice, I have to use grape. Psyllium is great. You could also add prunes and possibly a Med called Amitiza. Amitiza from pain management, or GP. It is very expensive but I have Medicare so I use their patient advocacy program and with their ppwk and Dr's signature you can receive free for a year at a time, then reapply. I would not use laxatives. Stool softeners work great and occasional Fleet for evacuating. Sometimes I use all because of opioids. Good luck.
