Amitriptyline and pregnany ? Anyone else

Hi everyone

Just wanted to get better understanding regarding amitriptyline. I take it for vulvodynia nerve pain. Has anyone else had a baby whilst on nerve pain medication at all ? On some forums like Mumsnet they seem to have some positive stories (i.e. healthy babies) .. ?

Thanks

I am not pregnant but wish to be in the next 4-5 years max

21 years ago I took a small dose of amytriptaline while pregnant and my daughter is perfect.

I waited until after the first trimester though.

Hi Maryjane55,

The best person to talk to would be your GP/consultant or a pharmacist. Firstly you need to ask if you need to come off it before you try to conceive and if you do how long you need to wait until you try for a baby. Then as a separate question if it’s safe to continue in pregnancy. I haven’t heard anything myself as I take this particular drug as part of my treatments for pelvic pain. The only drugs of concern are some of the epileptic drugs (although not all of them) such as sodium valproate which comes with caution in pregnancy. I hope this helps but it’s always best to check with a medical professional.

Thank you both I will ask my useless GP too later on
