Growth GP said needs urgent op

I found out on Monday in hospital that 2 years worth of gynecologist notes have gone missing, due no doubt to my previous GP ‘forgetting’ to follow up my womb problems.

My new GP said I should have been seen last Oct but nothing arrived.

I had a ultras scan and the people there huddled over my results and wouldn’t tell speak to me when I asked them about the results so I knew something was up.

I then got a call to say I need to see the gynecologist urgently, that was Monday.

I was told I needed an urgent op, already booked, for 2 weeks time and had my pre op check later that day. I have a large growth inside my womb which they think is a fibroid.

No one is telling me anything, should I be worried and think this is cancer? My stomach has been extended for ages and hurts me and I am getting terrible night sweats, I am past the menopause.

I had a back op 2.5 weeks ago so this is all I need.

Can anyone help out there?

Hi,

I’m sorry to read your post. The care from your last GP sounds very similar to mine and my notes which should be with my new GP have gone missing. Firstly I wouldn’t immediately think the worst. Scans are very good but they can sometimes show something which could be sinister so your medical team are being cautious and want you operated on ASAP. Sometimes it’s not clear whether a fibroid is just that a benign harmless growth or if it is something to be concerned about. Have you tried ringing the consultants secretary and saying that you are extremely worried especially at the lack of information which has added to this. We’re you given the name of a nurse who you could contact? If you don’t fancy going via the secretary you could always ring the clinic and explaining to one of the nurses (usually one of the sisters is a good option) as they can speak to the consultant on your behalf or arrange for another appt before your surgery. Don’t be afraid to say how this is all affecting you. Going into surgery when nothing has been discussed with you generally speaking isn’t ethical as when you are signing the consent form you are signing to say you understand the reason for the surgery, the risks and benefits, and what you would allow if there were complications- eg a blood transfusion, if it’s a laparoscopy sometimes they need to convert to a laparotomy which is a large cut on the abdomen, etc. Some consultants prefer to complete the form on the day of the surgery which is ok and I’ve had this myself but I’ve always known beforehand from my appt with the consultant what will be the plan, risks and benefits etc which has then been covered again in the pre op. Sometimes you will sign the form on the day after they have gone through the form and procedure again. I hope this helps but please let me know if you need any specific information as I’m always here to help

Hi, my notes have gone missing too, doctors are good at getting rid of things they don’t want to be seen. Fibroids don’t always mean cancer. I think they like to remove them in case they go cancerous. I had some removed from my bowel once, I think they always remove fibroids. Wishing you all the best.
