Hi - Very new member in need of some genuine advise please. In a nutshell I have a cyst on my left ovary of 4cm, it was 2.5cm last September and my gynae consultant is recommending it being removed via a laparoscopy as he suspects the cyst I have and given it has grown, is a sign I have endometriosis. He gave me the impression he can remove the cyst and any endometriosis whilst I have a laparoscopy, or wait 6 months and be re-scanned but if it gets much bigger its likely my ovary will have to be taken aswell. This is all very new territory for me, I suffer with very high anxieties, had this told to me over the phone as had a follow up consultation after a recent ultrasound on the phone, and didn't have the most talkative consultant. Any advise gratefully appreciated......???

Laparoscopy to remove cyst?
If your Consultant is recommending an op now then go for it. I had a large cyst and lost the ovary as well, then I had another which ruptured so I had to have emergency surgery because of peritonitis. I have another cyst now but the doctors won't operate ☹️
In your shoes I would be be getting it done asap.
Thanks....I think I'll opt for a laparoscopy, it's just I know no one likes prospect of an op but it's my first one, never had GA, am a real worrier and suffer with high anxiety.......the wait to have it done will raise anxiety and then I am so worried about how I will manage my anxieties on the day as imagine I'll be in quite a state.....it's going to be tough.

It would be worth getting your thyroid tested. For full details of what to ask for and how to get copies of your results please "Follow" this community on HealthUnlocked - you'll get loads of help :
Your cyst(s) may be caused by other issues, but it is worth getting your thyroid tested first, and acting on the results if necessary, before having surgery and risking the loss of an ovary.
Thyroid all ok.....tested at the end of last year. Thanks for reply.
I wouldn't take the word of a doctor on someone's thyroid function being "ok" unless they had seen the results and got a second opinion from thyroid patients who knew what they were talking about.
Doctors often ignore poor thyroid function because they think problems like hypothyroidism are unimportant and minor and they ignore them. It took me over 20 years to get treated for it, from when it first showed up in blood tests.
If you have a copy of your thyroid results (you are entitled to copies of your own results by law in the UK), including the reference ranges, you could ask the ThyroidUK forum on HU if they agree they are fine. You'll find them here :
Go with what the consultant says. If they have advised to get it removed then do so. They are the experts ! x
I think I'll opt for a laparoscopy. It's just I'm highly anxious so the thought of the op by the time I've gone through the wait for it all and what I'll be like on the day causes me a lot of worry and anxiety.....it's going to be tough......
Thanks for reply.
Just remember that everyone goes in anxious, nervous and worried, the doctors, nurses and anaesthetists are doing ops everyday so they know how to calm you down.
Yes most people are anxious and can feel a bit stressed out when they go to hospital or visit a GP. I’m sure you will be fine. It’s not a major procedure. If your really bad ( anxious ) maybe you could ask your Dr to prescribe some very light medication to help you remain calm. Though I’m sure you can do it without.
