I have been experiencing heavy bleeding and recently been in a lot of pain, I had an internal ultrasound yesterday as got my results today by my GP. I was told I had a fibroid and I would receive a hospital appointment. I am in so much pain and this worries me I will need surgery. I am only 27 and feel my chances of more children will be limited?

Fibroids- little information
Hi Rebecca,
Firstly I would like to reassure you that many women have fibroids and it doesn’t automatically mean you can’t have children. You won’t automatically be referred for surgery as they can give you medication to help shrink the fibroid. I’ve posted a link to nhs choices as there is a lot of useful information that can help with any questions you have. I’d also recommend writing a list of questions for when you see the consultant/registrar at the hospital. I would write out the questions in draft form and a few days before re write the questions but put them in order of importance as it’s likely the doctor won’t have time to go through all of your questions. You might have another ultrasound at the hospital or during your consultation if they have them in the clinic so they can see if the fibroid is shrinking. This does happen and they might then decide surgery is not required. Surgery isn’t usually the first option as it’s invasive and no surgery no matter how small is without risk. I hope this helps reassure you a little and feel free to ask as many questions as you want.
