Large bowel adhesion as a result of hysterectomy

Hi, had a hysterectomy last year and my surgeon believes the pain I am now getting is adhesion in/around large bowel. Anybody else had this? What symptoms do you have and what do you to to relieve them. thanks.

I recently had surgery and an incisional hernia was found with bowel stuck in it. So it does happen! But I had no pain and no idea that I had had it for 13 years since my hysterectomy! So I can't really help with pain relief advice. Take care.

Hi, I had a hysterectomy around 15 years ago and susequently had problems with my bowel ever since. This resulted in having the colon removed. I have so many adhesions in and around bowel, bladder and the pelvic area im in pain 24/7. I also have episodes whereby an adhesion or adhesions tear/swell and cause a small bowel blockage. Resulting in many hospital admissions and further surgery. I had surgery to divide and remove some of the adhesions 1 year ago to give me some relief, however this is temporary as over time the new adhesions stiffen and cause the same problems. My small bowel couldn't be separated from the pelvic wall for fear of perferarion. So I'm not symptom free, just have less emergency hospital stays at present. I also have a rectal prolapse and vaginal prolapse all following the hysterectomy. Sorry i don't bring any advise as to pain relief. I'm on daily analgesia but this does nothing to help when an adhesion swells. Iv everything is the only answer for 3 days. I am not nearly as bad - unless it gets worse over time. Have acute pain in either side of my groin, but does not last for long. Pain when bending or sitting orlying in certain positions and after a pain attack my whole tummy area aches for hours. Thinking of you - take care x

I tend to find the same as yourself re sitting, lying etc. I find it helpful to change positions slowly so as to let the adhesions stretch with the movement. sudden standing or stretching seems to intensify the pain. Also keeping the muscles surrounding warm helps, hot water bottle or heat pad can do wonders to ease the pain. The adhesions loose all elasticity you see so ensuring movements are subtle will alleviate them pulling. Hope this helps somewhat. It's not pleasant for you at all x

I had that for years and now all is settled. I had further surgery to divide the adhesions. Terrible pain I remember it well. I also had nerves divided to help the pain and that worked. Good luck. X

A plastic surgeon in Leeds general infirmary he was reluctant to do the op at first but I can't tell you how much I appreciate the operation back in 1995. I had a perforated bowel in 2004 but it was not related to the adhesions. Good luck I know that pain is just terrible. Best wishes.

I also had a hysterectomy 3 years ago. They found my right ovary & fallopian tube adhered to my bowel. Ever since, I suffer with dull to sharp pain on that side. I also have leakage, sudden urge if sat a certain way, feeling of not being 'empty' & also after eating sometimes I have to rush for the loo & not come out for ages! Any advice gratefully recieved!
