Hello.

Is it best to leave adhesions alone or to surgically treat them?

I have extensive adhesions sticking things together. These adhesions have be caused by surgery and endometriosis .

Any recommendations for medications specifically for adhesion pain?

Thanks

Hi Barb,

It depends how disruptive they are, where they are, what type etc. Have you seen a pain specialist ?

in reply to PPSN_JudyB

They are between both ovaries, bowel and uterus. Also on my uteral ligaments and in my POD.

Am waiting to see a pain specialist

How does it affect what you are able to do on a daily basis ? Have you tried amitriptyline already ? if it is neuropathic pain there are a couple of medications you could try.

hi barb

i've had a ruptured appendix as a child and at 32 a total hysterectomy as a consequence. had pelvic surgery which supposed to help remove the scar tissue and adhesions which only made matters worse. if you're prone to develop scar tissue as apparently i am i would strongly advise you to wait and try other treatments such as meds which i'm afraid i can't advise you on as i've been struggling for the last thirty years to endure the pain without going down that track. now at a pain management clinic which in my case doesn't help because their focus is getting people to get off or at least cut down on their drugs which is not really helpful for me as i'm not on anything but i think the time has come - for realistically at age 78 i don't really expect to be around for any longer than ten years if i'm lucky and i would like to have some quality of life now.

good luck in your search barb and god bless

God bless you too

Hello,

how the adhesions were diagnosed? by laparoscopy?

because when adhesions are found, they cut them. adhesions distort the anatomy and can compress organs, so it causes pain and other problems.., better always cut them.

is clear that the surgery itself may, or may not, cause more adhesions, but a surgical intervention definitely improves the anatomy of organs.

My daughter has pelvic adhesions and has had several operations involving removal of parts of her reproductive system, but it has also caused damage to her ovaries, bowel and bladder. She has found that BuTrans patches along with Tramadol for break through pain helps. Not enough for her to have a full and normal life, but it gets her through and makes it all a but more bearable. Unless

You can find a good consultant specializing in adhesions who uses barrier technics, then I would be tempted to say 'leave them alone', operations cause more adhesions as a rule. Good luck.

I have had numerous ops for adhesions and related problems, the last was a pelvic clearance in August. I was pain free for less than 8 weeks. I am lucky as I don't have blockages caused by adhesions, I belong to online support groups, many have ops of various types and most only have brief respite.

I would say talk it through with someone and ask lots of questions.

My pain is lower than it was, it's not as acute, no spikes as no ovaries, which were cystic and covered in adhesions stopping them functioning.
