from Dr Jones' book -

Cholestyramine (Questran) is the first line treatment for the itching.

If this doesn't work, then taking Rifampicin is the next line of therapy. Even when this is effective, it can make the liver worse. It is very important to check liver function tests after taking Rifampicin for 4 weeks.

Antihistamines usually don't work.

Recent trials have shown that bezafibrates can be effective for the itching. When taking bezabribrates there may be issues with renal (kidney) function.

Donna's thoughts.... I've said before that reoccurring liver function tests should also include a Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP) that measures kidney function. My own lab work always includes the liver panel, CMP, and a complete blood count (CBC).
