[i]Rifampicin -[/i] This is used for moderate to severe itching. Usually given if cholestryamine has been ineffective in helping the itch. Dosage begins at 150mgs daily.
It can sometimes cause nausea, and more significantly can cause some elevation in liver enzymes. When starting it, liver function

Cholestyramine (Questran) is the first line treatment for the itching.
If this doesn't work, then taking Rifampicin is the next line of therapy. Even when this is effective, it can make the liver worse. It is very important to check liver function tests after taking Rifampicin
