I was diagnosed 6 months ago and am taking Urso 500 mg twice per day. It seems to be working, at least my liver labs haven't gotten worse. My question is whether anyone else has severe nausea with Urso. I do take it with food, and have tried taking it right after eating instead of before or with a meal. It also can get really bad if I go longer than 2 -3 hours without eating something.
I think the nausea is from the Urso, because I haven't changed any other medications in the past year.
Thanks for any suggestions.

lilygrower, I have started taking mine at bedtime with a little toast because I had the same problem and I found the nausea easier to deal with because I’m going to sleep not trying to go about my day. Good luck. Happy it is working for you, I am a nonresponder to urso.
I would ask for 4 250g tablets. I take them like you after food but as it’s not such a big hit each time my nausea is much better. It does sound as if your stomach is a bit sore as you feel bad when your stomach has been empty. See if your doctor can give you something to protect your stomach. I did get used to Urso and don’t have a problem now. Good luck. Alison
Hi Lilygrower. I've been on 1000mg of Urso daily for nearly 3 years. I also have terrible nausea, along with intermittent diarrhea and cramping while taking Urso. I've tried taking it with food at bedtime which certainly delays the abdominal troubles until I rise. On days when the nausea is unbearable ondansetron (Zofran) helps and regular use of dicyclomine HCL (Bentyl) seems to help with the other gastric symptoms. The Urso has reduced my ALT & AST, but it hasn't significantly reduced my ALP. My direct bilirubin remains in the high-normal range so clearly the Urso is helping. However, the gastric problems are bad enough that I'm off the Urso as much as I'm on it. I'm now working with my gastroenterologist and primary to eliminate the possibility that the gastric problems are due to something other than Ursodiol. Then we are considering a trial of Ocaliva to see if I do better on that. I hope you find something that helps. Please post here if you do. At this point I'll try just about anything!
Yup, so now I take it before bed.. with a light snack..
I'm sorry to read that you're having nausea. It is one of the most difficult situations to manage and impossible to put out-of-mind? It can take a while to settle with urso. It helped me take all four capsules after the last meal of the day which has more fat than the 4 other small meals. Before bed, I have a small cracker or two. And when I wake, the same. Smaller, more frequent meals certainly suit us better with PBC whatever meds we take. The cause of your problem may be PBC, not Urso. Urso suits me at the moment. As it is early days on urso for you, you are probably being monitored for your response to it. The prescriber needs to know how bad it is affecting you. I wonder, did you report the difficulty before you used the oil remedy? Best wishes, keep us informed.
