Estriol Suppository

Hi,

My wife has been complaining about some post menopause complications in lower abdomen (genitals, lower urinary ways etc.). She thinks this is due to dropped estrogen production.

Her Gynaecologist gave her some low dose (0,03mg) estriol suppository to apply locally. She said this is not going to join in blood circulation.

Should we worried because of the Liver?

Did anyone used something like this? What are your experiences? Would the usage have some negative effect on Liver functions?

Many Thanks!

Betonarme,

Diagnosed 20 some years ago, I’ve never had itch or fatigue symptoms. Never had any gastro abdominal pain or elimination proba. I do have chronic UTIs, painful intercourse and lichen sclerosis all of which I personally attribute after years of study, to my pbc auto immune disorder. I use estradiol for painful intercourse, works like a charm. That, coconut oil and drinking over 32 oz water every single day. Also no additives or preservatives. No more than 1 day of eating meat per week so her body can recover. No more than 4 oz max alcohol per day, no more than 3x per week, period . Do yoga, enjoy nature, trigger relaxation response. Love her. My orders!

Hahaha

I have used vagifem and my consultant said it’s fine to use with PBC. I had to stop as it seemed to cause thrush so now tend to use replens from Boots. Epederm cream soothes the outside. I have had problem for a few years so if your wife can message me if she needs to.

I've taken it for years and there are no issues with it re: PBC as far as I know and no interactions with Urso or Ocaliva that have ever been brought to my attention. My GI is aware and no concerns. It makes a huge difference. I use one every 2-3 days. There's a slight concern re: uterine cancer so she could discuss that with her doctor. However, without it, it's very painful and also, there's a feeling like you have a UTI when you'd don't (feels similar but without the urgency).

I personally am happier taking that than something like Premarin which I wouldn't take due to ethical concerns (made from the urine of pregnant horses). So, I'm happier with these suppositories as I don't want to take something with systemic and other issues.

Cheers

I just wanted to add that this dryness happened with menopause and likely worsened by PBC. I also have Sicca syndrome (probably Sjogren's syndrome at this point), which causes dryness everywhere including eyes, etc. and that makes it worse. So, I've found the Estrodiol good as well as Cyclosporin in corn oil for my severely dry eyes (formulated by pharmacy and prescribed by my Optometrist (with the blessing of my Opthamologist), etc. I think it's essentially Restasis but half price as formulated). My eyes are so much better.

Vagifem is fine, had caused no problems for me. I use a suppository twice a week along with a vaginal moisturiser called Replens. The individual single doses of Replens are better than the reusable applicator version as it reduces the risk of infections. I personally haven’t found Vagifem causes thrush. The menopause can be a horrible learning curve and if there’s anything we can do to help each other make it easier or better, it’s got to be a good thing. My GP stressed that no significant amount of estriadol gets into the blood stream from a suppository and therefore has no effect on the liver or LFTs.
