B6 injections anyone

Hi I currently take B12 and B1 injections, my Naturopath Dr says I am not absorbing B vitamins well. I'm wondering if I could be B6 deficient also. Does anyone inject B6 and what benefits have you seen.

I have heard of others who alternate between B12 injections and B complex injections with good results and am actually considering trying this at some point. Since I have a number of digestive and absorption issues, as I am sure many here experience, it seems like being able to bypass the gut would bring much needed nutrients to the body. Interested to see how others respond to your question.

I take 1x 100 mg B6 tablet daily in addition to my multivitamin.

You naturopath is probably talking rubbish, as most of them do.

If you inject B6 then you stand a good chance of giving yourself peripheral neuropathy - which your naturopath should know.

Hi, very interested to hear this. It’s such a fine balance as to know what to do for the best outcomes. Why does it cause peripheral neuropathy? I take a B complex capsule and monthly B12 for PA. Is this harmful too?

Vitamin B6 is the one B vitamin that it’s possible to take too much of. Side effects of excess intake can include peripheral neuropathy. The recommended maximum dose is 100mg a day.

Other B vitamins do not carry this risk and so your B complex capsule and B12 should be fine, so long as the capsule doesn’t contain the excessive B6.

I recently posted this over on Thyroid UK:

The vitamin B6 paradox: Supplementation with high concentrations of pyridoxine leads to decreased vitamin B6 function

The paper rather undermines the "not enough, take some more" approach that so many have been advised with respect to B6, at least in its most common form.

I'd be very cautious about supplementing B6. I'd definitely want to know which vitamer was proposed.

Hi helvella, thank you for the article, I will read it later. I have really bad absorption gut issues and anything I take doesn't seem to make any difference. When I take vitamins in injection form I absorb it so well and my symptoms start to improve greatly. She is proposing that I go on a trial of 25mg injection every few days to see if I respond. I have so many neurological issues caused by my gut issues. I am aware of the dangers of taking too much B6 and causing more nero problems, so will be very careful and wary of this. We are monitoring symptoms and taking it very slowly.

Hi JanD236, I had been taking oral B6 every day for the last year in Thorne B complex, but my naturopath didn't feel I was actually absorbing or getting much of it because of my gut absorption issues. She put me on a trial of B1 recently and it was amazing what a difference it made to me. This is why she wanted to let me try 25mg injection every few days just to see if it makes a difference. I have to take a lot of B12 by injection to make a difference to me.

Hi fbrider, I appreciate your opinion, but my Naturopath is amazing, she is one of the best in the uk, and has basically saved my life when the medical profession where neglecting me. She has only suggested a trial 25mg injection of B6 every few days to see if it makes a difference because I have some very serious absorption and transportation issues. I knew that there was an issue of possible toxicity regarding B6 and that's why I asked the question to see what experiences others have had. I was put on a trial of B1 two months ago and have seen really good improvements using this. I have lots of neurological issues and demyelination and sub-acute combined degeneration of the spine caused by the delay of the medical profession to give me B12 injections. I do them myself now every second day and am starting to get better.

25mg is unlikely to be an issue in terms of causing neuropathy - the doses that have been associated with neuropathy have generally been 100mcg taken daily over a period of months and in a few cases it was irreversible.

The symptoms of B6 deficiency do overlap with with B12 deficiency.

Hi, Gambit,

I decided to take an increased B6 vit orally, Thorne B complex with extra B6 to see how I felt. I have definitely felt a difference this last week or so and think I'll continue with this for now. Just better to be cautious and see how things progress for a couple of weeks. Thank you for getting back to me.
