Vitamin B6 Dosage?

Hi, I want to take B6 on its own (not in complex). What dosage (in mg and how often) is recommended to take along with folate and SI B12.

You missed a bit of the question! :-)

Which form of B6?

helvella - Vitamers of Vitamin B6

Some time ago, I mentioned that the form in which we take vitamin B6 is important. I think I linked to this paper:

I would be extremely cautious about taking any form of B6 at a multiple of the NHS recommended limit of 10mg/day over a prolonged period. I took 100mg of the pyridoxine (PN) form probably for about six months, reducing to 50mg for a further eight months and began to experience some mild effects of toxicity around the ten month mark that slowly diminished after I stopped supplementation at that level a few months later. I've since tried 100mg of the pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) form but just a single capsule still causes the toxicity symptoms to re-occur.

I experienced an increase in peripheral neuropathy when improving my P-5P supplementation. I viewed it as the result of healing which has been borne out by my peripheral neuropathy only being a slight issue if I swim 800 m in cool water. I expect it will be gone completely if I continue my current regiment of B6. I do not miss the pain at all.

Thanks for your insights. So what dose do you recommend and is p5p easy to get hold of?

Did your symptoms go away after continuting the B6? I just started a few days ago (p-5-p) and i have all symptoms back like pins and needles, numbness, fatigue and I am very confused and stressed because of that.

Hey Kat_88,

Yes my symptoms did go away.

The confusion and stress of having symptoms come back is very hard for me to deal with also.

Consider that perhaps the return of symptoms is from using B12 more effectively and not going backwards. I do not know and what I do is trust that is what is happening. That is just me.

I self-treat differently so my experience is different.

Can I ask what sort of toxicity symptoms you experience please?

I experienced the following:

* Pins and needles + pain in right hand;

* Feeling of being slightly disconnected from the ground when walking or cycling;

* Difficulty/slowness in organising thoughts when working or in conversation;

* Lower mood and a general lack of enthusiasm for events/activities I would normally look forward to and enjoy.

The latter three have diminished to insignificance since stopping B6 supplementation; the first has decreased but is still occasionally noticeable.

Hey B12again,

One of the most important documents that I use to design my treatment came from helvella which they referenced in her reply to you. " The inactive form pyridoxine competitively inhibits the active pyridoxal-5'-phosphate."

Often people who write about the risks of B6 are either unaware about the different effect of the different forms of B6, chose to believe some other source that considers all forms of B6 to be identical or evaluate how I will heal differently.

As far as dosage goes I personally tolerate 200 mg spread over 4 doses. This comes from information and my evaluation of NIH toxicity of B6. "The ULs do not apply to individuals receiving vitamin B6 for medical treatment"

I am currently studying information about the metalation pathways and its relationship to my healing. The basics are B12, B6 and folate. I through trials have determined that Betaine Anhydrous (TMG) is important to heal my methylation pathways.
