Is it common to have multiple vitamin deficiencies with atrophic gastritis? I have struggled with my stomach since I was a child. If I wait too long before meals my stomach burns and I end up vomiting. I can’t take any kind of NSAID or my stomach burns and I vomit. I have been hospitalized with severe gastritis that made me unable to keep down fluids or food for eleven days (this happened four years ago) I decided to start heavy exercise a few years ago and I started to feel worse. Apparently I already had low vitamins and the exercise just bottomed them out. I have severe anxiety but decided to go to the doctor recently to have my vitamins tested. I am a 36 year old female. I had super low serum iron even after taking 3 iron supplements for two years. I have to take 4 iron supplements a day just to stay in the normal range. My ferritin has always been high even though my serum iron and transferrin saturation was low. My b12 was very low but by using b12 spray I can keep it in an ok range. My folate was high. My zinc was bottomed out but my copper was sky high. My Vitamin D level was low. My TSH was high normal but after my iron deficiency was corrected it went to an optimal level. My free t4 was and is in the lower range of normal. I have corrected all of these deficiencies but am still working on bringing my zinc level up. I tested negative for celiac and have no thyroid antibodies. I also tested negative for h pylori. I eat an excellent diet but have to constantly take supplements all day just to stay in the normal range. Are these vitamin issues common with atrophic gastritis? Thanks

Atrophic gastritis leads to Achlorhydria , which is a lack of stomach acid . Stomach acid is vital to the absorption process of the vitamins and minerals found in our food. You can acidify your stomach with Betaine Hydrochloric acid capsules with pepsin ( Amazon.uk ) It’s really advisable to have a nutritionist’s advice on how to use them , but you can get some information on the Internet . A good probiotic is also useful , as your beneficial stomach flora is affected by Achlorhydria. Probiotic foods could also be helpful -organic sauerkraut , kimchi , real yoghurt etc. Best wishes .
