Daily headaches after b12 deficiency

Hi everyone.

3 months ago I suddenly started getting daily headaches . Not the extreme kind, but a tension headache. I was found to be b12 deficienct. I also had some tingling. Weakness in legs.

I have now started daily/weekly/every other day injections of b12. And am also taking a Vit D supplement(2000U), Oral Multivitamin and oral b12 daily.

Im only 24 with no history of any health issue including headaches.

Has anyone experienced these symptoms and if so were they resolved at some point?

Thank you.

Not diagnosed as having PA. My b12 value was 225. But I had tingling, one side weakness, a little fatigue.

And after a while daily headaches. Tension type. No nausea, photosensitivity or sound sensitivity.

Although I am happy to make suggestions regarding vitamins on the TUK forum, as I have no personal experience of B12 deficiency I will leave it to the experts on the PA forum to comment here.

I've had daily headaches and also migrains since being b12 deficient. No history of them. I get a headache the day or day after my B12 injection. But then they ease a bit. I get a tight skull especially when weary. Alot of other nasty neurological symptoms have lessened or gone with b12 injections. I'm 9 months in and am now at last having some breaks. I was concerned about rebound headaches but have managed 14 days off paracetamol. So they were not rebound.something to consider though. The last neurologist thought my present ongoing ones are now of the chronic tension ones. There are loads of drugs to try. The last one offered was propranolol a betablocker. I've not taken it . I did trail amitriptyline that does help some bit came off it after 3 weeks. So I would keep a diary. Food vits you take activity. I've avoided alcohol completely and reduced caffeine . I think vit D helps. Watch your magnesium leveks. Get bloods done of vits and minerals as well as iron ect.

Age is on your side if you csn get the right balance and don't push too hard and follow your body to rest . I hope they ease for you as I know how dibilitating they are.

Hi. Mine are thankfully not debilitating. But I’m worried if I’ll ever get my old life back. I was a completely healthy fit adult. Now I’m scared of being so sick forever. It gets better right?

Yes with the right treatment and lifestyle management. Stay positive. Take care

So, I did an MRI. Eye test: all blood levels.

Everything completely standard.

I have no fatigue. No inability to do work. No dizziness. (Touchwood). Just weakness in legs. Headaches. And I’ve only had 5 shots. Just started oral supplementation. My doctor says it’s good you caught this early. Because I was diagnosed within a couple of months of my symptoms.

My worry is do people lead normal lives after this?

I’m only 24 and am fairly ambitious. Heading to business school next year. I play a little guitar and have a pretty active social life.

I should be able to get back to normal right?

Hi Prateek,

I am 28. your Symptoms Echo mine and good that you identified it earlier unlike me. If the symptoms are due to b12 deficiency they will subside with frequent injections but takes time and pls don’t be anxious or worry as they lead to some other problems. Since your results are normal try to get tested for the PA causing antibodies parietal cell antibody and intrinsic factor antibody. Also check for thyroid checks as they are all related.

Will definitely consider getting a magnesium supplement as well. I’m taking a multivitamin which has magnesium currently. I’ll talk to my GP.

I’ve had migraines forever & used to have daily headaches. I was not diagnosed with B12 deficiency as not tested, but was low in folate.

I found I am so much better with supplements, not cured but much better! I take daily/every other day B12 jabs, folate, vit D & Magnesium which is a really good supplement for migraines.

Hope you find a balance, it’s hard going.
