Medical Marijuana

Good morning,

just throwing it out there but has anyone here tried medical marijuana for pain relief?

Apparently more and more GPs are starting to refer patients to this than going down the opioid route.

I’ve got an appointment in a few weeks I’m going to talk to my GP about it as my pain medication at the moment is very hit and miss.

You can get medical cannabis containing THC by private prescription, it was licensed in 2018 . I've been seriously thinking about it as Oramorph & Buphrenorphine patches are not keeping my pain under control , especially in winter . Alternaleaf is one of the companies offering private prescriptions xx

Yes it is in UK , not sure of cost yet but shall be looking into it. I have had various injections but nothing much seems to help in winter especially . As long as the cost is not prohibitive i will get my summary of care from my GP & try one of the clinics .I was on Fentanyl patches but Pain Management took me off & put me on Buphrenorphine, I'm so glad they did after reading up on it.

Hi guys,

Yeah I know of a few underground places who do it and the private sector. I wondered if anyone had actually got a referral from a GP for their pain. Interesting stuff though, would be nice to find out how effective it is compared to the opiates and stronger meds etc

I've found it incredible in all honesty. I was super against it until last year when I hit a brick wall. I discussed it with pain management and he was all for it (legal route of course) but the price of a private route is expensive. I've had to stop now because I'm pregnant (scary with so many medical issues and chronic pain).

I have noticed my pain levels increased once I stopped it. Tbf I only ever would have two pulls off a night before bed but it did work.

Hello! That’s really good to hear. If you don’t mind me asking, what chronic pain issues do you have?

Congrats on the baby!!

Thank you very much ❤️

So I'll try and sum up.

Had both hips replaced at 25. Still have pain in the left.

Degenerative disc disease in my lumbar spine.

Dysplasia in my shoulder

Dysfunctional SI joint (also arthritis in that joint)

Chronic Achilles tendinitis (without any injury)

Patellofemoral dysfunction

Fibromyalgia

This is my first pregnancy so it's already extremely scary and anxiety triggering without the medical things on top.

Crikey!! That’s a list. I really appreciate your reply. I really hope the pregnancy goes well ❤️

Hi. I'm in Australia and none of the pain medications I took were helping me. I decided to give cbd oil with THC a go. Now I take 2 panadol and 2 ibuferen with 1ml CBD oil before I go to bed. I'm getting 5 hours or more before the pain kicks in. The CBD oil definitely helps me sleep. No more sleeping 1 hour walking for 1 hour all night long

BertoBishop profile image
BertoBishop in reply toNanaJay123

The CBD I got in the UK never worked for me unfortunately. All that stuff is so unregulated here that I don’t think you ever know what you’re actually getting.

Hi, NanaJay123,

I am so pleased that you've found a solution to the "sleep one hour and wake with pain cycle". That's where I've been at for years now and I was delighted to read your reply to BertoBishop!

I have peripheral neuropathy, restless legs Raynaud's and Erythromelagia. The sleep disruption is probably the worst thing associated with this combination of conditions. I can't take Ibuprofen (they caused a gastric ulcer and I was told that I should never take them again). I take 450mg Pregabalin daily, and when I wake at midnight, or so, I take just Paracetamol 1g and Codeine Phosphate 60mg. They make no difference to the terrible pain, tingling, painful swelling and need to move my feet but the Codeine does allow me to sleep a bit longer at a time. In desperation, when I'm weeping with pain and exhaustion at 2.00 or 3.00am, I resort to occasional sleeping tablets, which allow me about 4 hours of oblivion but I don't like the hangover effect, or the risk of dependence. I have a very sluggish bowel, which predisposes me to constipation so other, regular, oral forms of opiates are out and every Buprenorphine patch I've tried raises a really itchy, red skin reaction.

My Pain Consultant rather surprisingly, told me to get in touch with a private clinic called Curaleaf (neat name, huh?), and I had a video consultation with one of their doctors last week. Their MDT will assess my case and then, hopefully, I'll pay for a prescription for a tiny dose of an oral form of medical cannabis. I don't know what will be in the sublingual oil (or pastilles) that will be prescribed.

TBH, I'd just about reached the end of my tether and am pinning my hopes on cannabis helping, at least with my sleep.

Sorry but you won't get it via GP, private route is only option currently in UK except for certain relatively rare conditions. Unfortunately the T21 project through which some people could get it discounted has now closed but there's still good info on the site: drugscience.org.uk/t21 Also, good quality CBD products are available here, I was recommended one by a pain consultant but don't remember the name at the moment.

BertoBishop profile image
BertoBishop in reply toScotsman53

Ah ok, I appreciate your reply. I guess the issue (for me, anyway) is knowing what’s “good quality CBD”. I did go to a shop that had some supposed quality CBD and it wasn’t cheap but it did nothing. So I’m unqualified in this area really.

Hi Painmanagement consultant can refer you to the clinic in stirling I think it's about £140p/m om edging closer to trying it myself. Hope this helps

I have tried gummies for IBS pain for about a week. It relieved my pain but made me feel out of my head.

I use it for sleep but haven't found a strain good for pain. I've learned that it's the specific terpenes in cannabis that can affect pain. However, I have found hemp gummies with those pain affecting terpenes to be helpfulErth Wellness is the only hemp company I am aware of that lists the terpenes in the particular strain. Northern lights is pretty good. (These are gummies that I take.)

skylark15 in reply toNontoxic

Hi, Nontoxic.

Good to read your reply. So gummies (is that the American term for pastilles?) help you to sleep; it's helpful, thank you.

If Curaleaf (see my reply to NanaJay) decline to prescribe, I will look for the Northern Lights brand.

77 year old Canadian woman. Legal here and I take a TCh and CBD gummy before bed at times when pain gets bad. I don't suppose they are any worse than some over the counter meds. I will also take one if I let the strain of pain get one up on me. I find being anxious makes me hurt more. I suggest you start with a light gummy and work up slowly. You will become used to the effects and may need to watch that you don't like the feeling too much as you grow used to it. If you are think you are going to drop into Mary-Jane madness. just stop reading those books from 1980!

I live with a very painful neuropathy. My care after my right pudendal nerve was left triple crushed was nonexistent. It was an athletic injury.

I was just poly drugged and left sedated without a proper/legal ‘Pain Clinic Intake’ process ( I was told I’d be seen in a Pain Clinic in a major Vancouver hospital). NOT. I was seen on a ‘Medicine Ward’. No doctor cared or listened to me. I had no voice.

As a result I was left misdiagnosed and in miserable burning acute pain for over five years. My Sympathetic Nervous System was severely agitated.

I use a gummie that contains 25mg. CBD, 2.5 mg THC and 5 mg CBN. I take it at bedtime with two meds I still require. My sleep is much better. You can’t heal if you’re not sleeping.

I hope you find a product that helps. Good luck .

ah sorry guys, I should noted that I’m in the UK. I really appreciate all the responses though. Interesting to know that a few people here are already taking something.

I’ve got a GP app soon so I’ll mention it, and I was sent a link to some CBD - I’ll do some more research :)

Hi, I'm from Belfast. Have degenerative disc disease, in lower back and arthritis in neck also chronic nerve pain for the past seven years. Currently talking the following: 2 x Co-codamol 30/500mg four times daily, Gabapentin 100mg x 3 times daily, Tramadol 150mg x 3 times daily & Duloxitine 100mmg x 1 once daily. Yes 15 tablets daily is a real chore for me. I really have contemplating the medical cannabis route but the pricing is putting me off big time, it seems just a license for the private sector to print money, an absolute disgrace since the UK is a big producer of medical cannabis. Will take a bit more time to consider it, but I'm so concerned about what the opioids and others are doing to me, I must be addicted by now but when I don't take my meds I feel the difference and not in a good way believe you me, trying to go about my daily business with so much meds on or in me with there side affects isn't a great feeling trying to keep down a job the alternative is feeling zoned out at home.

Hey Darko,

Haha, yes, isn’t one of our former prime ministers an owner of a huge growing farm?!

Thanks for you reply. I’m still contemplating- might try some heavy duty meditation first.

It's if the medication works and you don't become too tolerant to the medication is the issue not to mention being constipated, tiredness. Guess if f money isn't any object go for it anyway good luck!

My consultant neurologist thinks it would be ideal for me, but she’s not ‘allowed’ to prescribe it as I don’t fit the criteria 😡. I have constant pain and am on Tramadol .

BertoBishop profile image

Yeah same Maggiet, although I cycle the Tramadol otherwise my body just gets used to it.

I came off it for a while last year, but I was just a ball of pain all the time so I’ve gone back on it. I would like to try medicinal cannabis, but, even with all the hype about how it was going to be used, it’s just not happened, sadly.

BertoBishop profile image
BertoBishop in reply toMaggiet

I know, I came off it for a long time and tried to manage the pain. Double edged sword for me, chronic pain is horrendous to live with, but being on Tramadol/Morphine patches has meant I can be equally not all there.

There’s certainly no easy answer! I’m 69 so I’ve got to the stage where I want to have my remaining years with something that takes the edge off! Good luck to you 😊
