sorry to hear that you are suffering for 10 days. No bowel movement in 10 days and laxatives are not helping is not good. I am surprised your gp didn’t refer you to gastrointestinal doctor. I know my pain meds can cause that but I take magnesium to prevent it. I don’t know what specialist would do but it’s worth a phone call. I really hope you are better soon.

Hi, sorry your in pain. Something like this happened to me a while ago, no bowel movement for 7 days and this was caused by my meds (I didn't know this at the time). My doctor was straight on it and gave me some suppositories to use at home and luckily they worked but he said if I didn't go within another 2 days he would send a nurse out to give me an enema. Now I regularly take a stool softner not a laxative and fingers crossed it hasn't happened to me again.

Hope you get sorted soon xx

I do hope you can find relief soon, and if I were you I’d be in the ER by now. Ten days is way too long to go without a bowel movement, so I would imagine the pain would be intense. Hopefully you won’t have to resort to surgery.

I’m not a doctor but pay really close attention to my body and whenever something doesn’t feel right or it’s not working the way it should, I look back to what may have caused it. I have had similar issues to yours while taking Tylenol 4 with Codeine which, like all other opioids will slow or even stop your bowels. I have learned to take extra fiber whenever I take an opioid, either fiber in capsule form with lots of water and/or juice or else a glass of Metamucil followed by plenty of more water.

The key to stay hydrated—more than usual or the fiber will get stuck somewhere in the gut and cause the kind of pain you’re experiencing. If your urine is any darker than a very pale yellow you need more fluids. It’s also important to hydrate when you take a laxative, and either a sports drink or electrolyte supplement if you start feeling dehydrated.

If you haven’t tried an enema that could help start to move things, but check with your doctor. I use a saline solution which helps, but I also have an attachment on the shower in case things really need a good flushing out.

Best wishes and let us know how you’re doing.

If I was you I would go and get some suppositaries from the chemist , if you go to hospital it will be an enema not nice. Then you will need to try and use something that works on you to keep you bowel working regular , a lot of the tablets given cause constipation . Its not easy to get it flowing again down there once it gets stuck .I am sure your local chemist will help.

hi, sorry to hear about your situation. If it’s that bad go to A&E, but I find it strange your doctor didn’t give you a suppository as well as this breaks it down from the other end. I have had this happen to me and the laxative I got was prescribed and started to work after 5 minutes, it was similar to the one you get for a colonoscopy. If left can become impacted and you have to go to hospital (I also had this) because it is so painful. Hope you find the solution for you. Kevin

Am surprised that your doctor has not given you a prescription for Picolax it is in powder form and was given to me to take before having a Colonoscopy. It sure works wonders and cleared me out in no time.

Hello Junny, Such along time 'in prison' .... that's horrible! Medicines can make it worse - by their dehydration nature.

I use linseeds (=flaxseeds) regularly. About 1-2cm deep dry seeds at bottom of glass and fill glass near full with v. hot water to soak for few hours. WHEN BIT SOFT AND GELATInOUS stir them up and drink all down - or spoon them in. May need repeat daily, and adding more linseeds.

Best wishes, and hope its works. (Good natural nourishment too!) TimbowPSP

Hi Junny,

Surprised your gp didn't offer you anything, that's very unusual. The chemist should e able to recommend some suppositories, they do tend to work... laxatives work from the top end... suppositories work from the bottom end... which it sounds to be part of the problem. Do try those first ... but don't stray too far from the loo! The alternative is having enemas... not pleasant.

Hope you get sorted soon. take care x

Have you actually had a Colonoscopy yet. I would have thought that would be the next thing your Doctor would suggest after so long without a bowel movement. If you haven't please ask him, as it would be the only thing that would show up whether anything was amis. It is not a painful procedure, I had one when I had a bowel bleed. Luckily I am O.K. Believe me, the relief at knowing my results were simply taking too much Asprin. I'm on a different tablet now and the problem has gone away! Good luck and God bless. XX

Please go to A&E as soon as possible. A friend of mine died because she hadn't been able to empty her bowels for 3 weeks. It starts to release toxins into your body and then leads to organ failure. So please get it sorted out NOW.

i’m in hospital now. x-ray of my stomach came back normal. waiting to do ct scan

Junny123 profile image
Junny123 in reply topollcat68

done x-ray ultra sound and ct scans. all showed normal. consultant said i’m very badly constipated. keeping me in and starting me on some strong laxatives. said this happens to lots of people. only laxatives help

I’ll be taking a laxative daily.

Truly hope that the hospital got you sorted out. You must have been in agony so, hopefully by now things are back to normal for you. A stool softener may be a better way to go than just laxatives in future. Kindest wishes 😊
