tried chiro-practice, or osteopathic

Hi,

Has anyone tried chiro-practice, or anything osteopathic to help with back-muscle pain? I had back surgery in 2015, with my lowest three vertebrae fused. Back pain returned about 5 years ago, and is getting worse.

My consultant said it is muscle pain. Can anyone offer advice, please?

I see my chiropractor regularly for back pain, she does straighten me up and it helps my muscle pain.

No I’ve not had back surgery but I do have chronic back problems and likely now have the beginnings of a squished disc.

You are likely to get different opinions on here, but I’m afraid I am strongly in the osteopath camp. Osteopaths are highly trained medical professionals and whilst the one I saw was unable to get rid of long term back issues he did help at the time.During the same episode I saw a chiropractor (via recommendation) twice and am convinced she actually made things worse! So in all honesty I don’t recommend them. I have also had physio for my back and again sadly I didn’t find it helpful.

If your consultant is sure it’s muscular think an Osteopath could help if they will help with massage & exercises. My opinion of Chiropractors is personal to me, luckily I cancelled an appointment before being told I had an unstable fracture in my spine. A Chiropractor should give you X-rays & MRI scan but minimum of X-rays. Thorough examination without adjusting anything & check your spinal nerve reflex’s… if in doubt stop the appointment, pay & leave! But lots find them very beneficial, so I’d search for 1 with excellent reviews.

Where are you from? UK? I am wondering because in uk chiropractors don’t do MRI scans or X-rays. They are not qualified to do this and can’t even make a referral for these tests. Whereas an osteopath can do lots of different tests and make assessments following that. However they will still not do X-rays or MRI’s. It would be gp who arranged those.

My Chiropractor can refer for X-rays privately.

The chiropractor I saw was rubbish (despite going via a recommendation) am convincing she actually made things worse. I had some sessions with an osteopath and he was excellent. I accept there were limits to what he could do but felt comfortable and safe with his approach.

Chiropractors in private clinic attached to some private hospitals including get an X-ray or MRI or use the Spine Consultants ones. Wouldn’t see anyone without x-ray apart from a specialist spine physiotherapist who know my history. Don’t think they’re used often enough & people go straight to Chiropractors.
