I am supposed to be having a zelondronic acid IV infusion for my osteoporosis, but it has had to be cancelled due to low Vitamin D levels. Does anyone know if there are any side effects in taking high dose Vitamin D? I have so many side effects from my other medications that I don't think I could cope with any more
Gentle hugs xx

The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause nausea and vomiting, weakness, and frequent urination. ... Blood levels should be monitored while someone is taking high doses of vitamin D.
If you are deficient, high doses will not quickly cause toxicity. What is a high dosage to you? Iβve taken 10,000 iu plus K2 4-5 times a week for years. I wear daily sunscreen and do not expose much of my skin to the sun. I maintain my D level at the top 90% of the range. I retest D every 6 months. I have tested toxic twice years ago, with about 8 years between the two episodes. Both times were when I was exposed to a lot of seasonal sun while on the above dosage. Both times I had increased body pain. My calcium was never flagged high when I had D overload.
Take your high dosage for a month or two and then retest D.
Some people are not able to tolerate Vitd supplements so I would advise start on a low dose first to see how you react, I get horrible side effects from Vitd even in very small doses so I cannot take it at all, my vitd level is always very low.
How low is your Vitamin D result? Do you have the numbers? You can ask for a copy of result (free of charge since new rules from 25 May 2018).
You could have insufficiency, deficiency or severe deficiency. The doctor who tested you should have told you, and prescribed colecalciferol (D3) supplements.
In cases of deficiency the treatment starts with a Loading dose taken in split doses over a period of 4 to 10 weeks, depending on which treatment regime is decided upon. This is a very high dose to bring your levels up.
One example is 300,000 IU taken as 50,000 IU a week for 6 weeks another is 280,000 IU taken as 4000 IU per day for 10 weeks.
You would then remain on the maintenance dose which could be 800 IU to 1000 IU every day in some cases up to 2000 IU.
Look up the " NICE guidelines for treatment of Vitamin D deficiency".
If insufficient you may be given 800 IU to 2000 IU daily. Either way you should be tested again after a few months.
I wouldn't be concerned about Vitamin D toxicity, your level is low so must be corrected. Also Google "NHS choices - symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency ".
There are also posts about this on the Thyroid forum.
I have a severe deficiency. My doctor prescribed 50,000 IU of D2 once weekly and 5,000 IU of D3 daily and I have blood checks every 3 weeks. I haven't had any side effects besides insomnia if I take it outside of morning hours. Just make sure you take it with a fatty meal as that is what helps your body absorb it and lessen possible side effects.
I'm very pill-phobic and was scared to take it, but I've had 3 different physicians and numerous pharmacists tell me that it's very rare to get a toxicity, especially when you're already deficient. Just keep in close contact with your doctor.
Lara have you had osteoporosis long and taken other treatments, if so what were they. I worked in the Osteoporosis area for some time and there are some treatments that are good & wont affect your vitamin D
