severe vitamin d deficiency

seems amlodipine calcium channel blockers trigger vitamin d deficiency. I had to come straight off them after a consultation with my dr. He's going to phone on Monday to advise what I need for lowering blood pressure instead. I can't have beta blockers because I get asthma. The worst pain i've ever felt in my arms, chest and under ribs at the back, It has eased since stopping those ccbs and going back on all my previous meds for various things, that the other dr advised me not to take. A bit confused but i suppose it is trial and error until the balance is right. Still eating healthy and pleased to say my appetite has reduced so not much problem with a hiatus hernia. Would be interesting to know how others have got on with lowering blood pressure when they have asthma, underactive thyroid, allergies to some medicines and severe vitamin d deficiency/ no wonder we have anxiety.

It will be interesting to see what the GP's solution to your complex puzzle is. :)

I'm severely deficient in vitamin D but am no help to you because my BP has always tended to the low side - roughly 90/54.

A member of my family addressed raised BP with beetroot juice (it's the nitrates -> nitric oxide) but I don't know how many people that suits.

Good Luck!

I think there are some clinical studies around the use of beetroot juice for lowering blood pressure.

My BP is just my BP, I don't think it needs treatment. It used to be much lower than the recommended limits then when the number was reduced to 100/60 a few years ago it was quite funny as the guidelines moved towards me. :)

Sorry to hear this. The confusion and concern it's causing not really helpful for blood pressure is it!

May I ask what dose Levothyroxine you are on and when you last had your Thyroid function blood test done? I'm on 75mcg. My TSH was 1.94 in April and, of course, GP was happy with that as Endocrinologist had said Therapeutic level maximum 2. I, too, have Hiatus Hernia, but didn't know until damage to throat had been caused by rising stomach acid. Are you on a PPI also? I am on Zoton Fastab orodispersible lansoprazole as the generic cheaper alternatives gave me problems.

I asked for blood tests for Vitamin D, B12, Folate and Ferritin levels in April -after reading about these on Thyroid forum. I was found to have Folate deficiency and Vitamin D insufficiency. So am now on Folic Acid and Vitamin D tabs. I didn't know that people with Underactive Thyroid can have absorption issues until I read it on Thyroid forum. I also hadn't realised till this year that people with Diverticulum have malabsorption also. I have BOTH!

A GP once presribed blood pressure tablets , which I never got around to taking. She did this after taking my blood pressure just once. On occasions I had raised blood pressure but mostly it's been low. It was very low when I was ill back in 2008 and no one told me there were lots of abnormalities in my blood tests including Hypothyroid results. So not diagnosed and treated till late 2011.

I have Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis and Hypothyroidism. Do you have Hashimoto's?

So, as I've never actually taken blood pressure medication, I'm afraid I can't help with comments on this. I know people who have had some problems though. As you say, it is trial and error. We are all unique individuals and it can take time getting the right balance of meds.

I hope you get sorted soon and your symptoms remain eased and settle down till you feel really well again.

ps

Before I was on the Lansoprazole for the GORD and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux my Asthma was worse and I had 'night cough' . I was prescribed additional Steroid (orange one) inhaler (which I no longer need) as well as the blue Salbutamol. Since being on the Zoton my Asthma hasn't been as bad and I rarely even use my Blue inhaler.

Forgot to ask - did your GP prescribe initial Loading Dose of Vitamin D?

Have you looked up NICE guidelines for treatment of Vitamin D deficiency?

hi Mary I'll answer soon thanks for your post. i'm just too upset and hands weak to type much at the moment. My dad who has severe dementia is in hospital with aspiration pneumonia and not long left. So I'm in a bit of a state my health doesn't feel too important right now. Sorry to hear your having all those symptoms does seem one thing causes another. I'm not religious but I take comfort in being thankful for the days which are better than the others, their not all bad, hope that's the same for you. relaxation and mindfulness goes a good way towards helping and always good to have an empathetic dr. x best wishes i'll answer your q's re meds etc soon x
