pain after TAH

Hi all I am 4 weeks after having a tah, omentom removed, appendectomy and hernia removed. I was also given 2 pints of blood. This was due to a massive ovarian cyst that I didn't know I had. This ruptured before surgery so I also had to be washed out. I have so far been really lucky as I have not had much pain but I did have to have antibiotics for wound cellulitis. Anyway in the last 2 or 3 days I have had some pain internally and was just wondering if this was normal as I haven't seen a doctor since leaving hospital and haven't seen my district nurse for 2 weeks. My next hospital appointment isn't till the 16th March and I don't want to annoy my busy doctors practice if it is nothing

You have just had huge surgery, and four weeks isn’t a long time for you to have healed internally. I’m sure more experienced ladies will be along soon . I wouldn’t worry about annoying your doctor , that’s what they are there for .i would be insisting to be see tomorrow.

Good luck

Thank you Sheila. It is very difficult to get an appointment at my surgery and it is just over 2 weeks till my hospital appointment. I am controlling the pain with ibrufen and paracetamol but wasn't sure if the pain was normal as I haven't had much pain at all just a few twinges. Thank you for your advice

You will get a certain amount of pain, it is major surgery,

However, if you experience any inflammation, or high temperature or anything else you are worried about, get in touch with your team, gp, or A &E if you are extremely worried.

It depends on your level of pain, I was in discomfort for at least 6 weeks, you just need to monitor it,

Personally, I would call the District Nurse. She should take a look at you and your wound, to make sure you are healing properly.

That is their job.

If you don’t have their number, call the receptionist at your surgery and ask them to arrange a district nurse to visit you. Exaggerate your symptoms if you have to, because it is better to be safe now.

It does take at least 8 weeks to recover from such a surgery, but it is good to have your dressing changed and your wound to be looked at by a pro.

Best wishes,

Laura

I had all sorts of pains and discomforts for weeks after surgery. I did see the Practice nurse at the surgery to redress the wounds but I think the District Nurse is a good idea although I don’t think they would have come out for me as they are too busy. Otherwise a phone appointment with your doctor or the hospital ward where you were treated. I think it is probably normal but better to be safe than sorry.

Hi Diamond art, l went through very similar surgery & had a lot of pain afterwards, semi controlled by codeine & paracetomal. However when the pain was particularly hard to bear & my temperature tipped 37°, rang GP, receptionist blocked me to say no appts available. My CNS rang the surgery to say this is urgent but got same reply. (She was shocked). Then advised l go to A&E. I did, was admitted & turned out to be bladder infection & put on IV anti biotic drip. So l wouldn't take risks, ring CNS &/or get to A&E. Good luck & warm best wishes, what a bumpy ride we are all on!

Hi Thanks to all of you for your help and advice. Managed to get an appointment with the doctor this morning who checked me out and all is healing nicely. I have picked up a flu virus but he says that can happen as my immune system is low. Anyway I feel much better as it has removed the worry and he has told me that if I have any other problems, I have to go straight back
