Dry skin and Caelyx

PhillipandBettykid profile image

Hi lovelies, the rotten liver tumour is growing again so I am back on the chemotherapy. My first time on Caelyx. The consultant warned me it would make my hands and feet dry. She suggested using cold water to ease the discomfort. Magnesium foot baths, here I come. Any advice on moisturiser creams, etc.

Thanks

Hi there,

I have been in a combination of Carboplatin and Caelyx for the past 4 months.

I was given a skin cream with my first infusion and I used it for my hands and feet every morning and evening, but after a while, I just stopped using anything because I did not experience dry skin.

I check myself every time I have the energy to shower and all seems well.

I have been pretty fatigued for the first 7 days, but after that, I usually feel pretty good. I could drive my car as there was no Chemo fog and took short walks for local shoppers, etc.

This 4th infusion however, has made me much more fatigued and in fact, each cycle has taken me longer to bounce back, so I guess that is a problem.

I did have a few mouth:gum sores, so having a mouth wash specifically for sores on your gums is essential.

I have heard that Caelyx alone is a lot tougher, so I hope your experience disproves that and you can function normally.

Best wishes,

Laura

Thanks Laura, this is really helpful. I am having it with carboplatin. Before I had Paclitaxol which was a vicious brute. I do think the effects are cumulative so am sure i will get more tired. 😴

Oh good! I think that somehow having Caelyx with Carbon decreases the side effects of both!

I have kept all my weird curly hair and feel a thousand percent better than I did on first line.

Just more fatigued this month, but NOT more fatigued than when I was on Taxol and Carboplatin!

We are all different, but hopefully you will take this new regimen in stride.

Oh, and it has totally worked in knocking back this recurrence.

I go to the oncologist tomorrow before my fifth infusion and I totally expect my CA-125 to be down to a single digit!

I went from 473 to 27 after 3 infusions!

Hugs,

Laura

I’m sure I have read a lot about this - it might be worth searching for older posts on this forum. I haven’t had caelyx yet but have a feeling it might be coming my way.

I’m having my 5th on Thursday. The dry hands have got progressively dryer. They sort of peel. Consultant said E45 and I found Aveeno for my hands. Feet aren’t too bad at the moment, just a sore big toe. Just keep moisturising and I read somewhere to keep hands cold rather than warm but I may have dreamt that!! I’ve gone from hating hand cream to having it in every pocket and bag!

Hi from Laura,

I am going for my fifth infusion on Monday!

I am a lot more fatigued this past month than the months before.

How are you doing?

Thanks,

Laura

Hi Laura! yeah me too, this one has made me really tired. But ‘glad’ to hear you are the same...makes me think it’s normal!! Just sitting in oncology waiting to see the man and hopefully good to go for tomorrow!

Been ok, just really tired and sore skin but nothing I can’t deal with. How are you doing? x

Hi!

Went to my Onc day before yesterday. Down to Ca-125 of 18 and all set for Monday’s infusion.

My bloods are fine, only slightly low. Nothing to worry about, so fatigue is jus cumulative Caelyx.

She offered to lower the dose, but I am only doing computer work at home and my husband is doing all the shopping, so I can live with another down month, so going ahead as usual.

Just want to get clear. If it’s so bad this coming month that U can’t walk up the stairs, we can lower it for the 6th infusion.

Just happy to destroy the cancer.

I have sores over the roof of my mouth that are not going away, even with my great mouth wash, but hopefully they will go next week when I stop drinking coffee.

I love my 2 cups of coffee and cable news in the morning, but after infusion, I have cable news by itself! Don’t want to rock the nausea boat. I start again after the first week.

Hope all is well for you,

Hugs,

Laura

Great news! My CA125 was 14 on Wednesday, he told me I looked pale but bloods were ok.

I’m with you, would rather just do it and hopefully get rid! And I’m not good on coffee or spicy food this week (my favourite things!)

We then talked Parps a bit, but will talk more after no 6!

Good luck for Monday, will be thinking of you...hugs right back, see you on the other side xx

My sister got me some Bag Balm ( they use it in Colorado for cow's udders where due to the high altitude and lack of moisture everything is permanently dried out) . It is wonderful stuff, coats skin instantly and stops it from feeling dry. No smell. A little goes a long way. The other one I use after a shower is shea butter.

Good luck with your treatment, sending virtual hugs.

I love this although my udders seem ok at the moment 😊. I amazoned it and you can get udder cream in the uk. Pity all my farming friends have retired. I am keeping it up my sleeeve for the worse case scenario.

I've not had Caelyx myself but remember someone recommending Udderly cream and using Aveeno products.

Hope it does the trick for you. 💐😘

Hello PhillipandBettykid. I hope today is a good one for you . Have you tried rosehip oil?? It’s so great at moisturising and smells nice . I get it at TKMaxx or on Amazon . Currently am on Taxol which isn’t pleasant but a lot less vicious that FEC which was like being hit by a double decker !! Still tomorrow treatment 4 and 8 more to go !

There’s another organic cream German called JASON , and that good for feet and hands but I pamper my face with rosehip oil day and night . It sure is a test of endurance and I do hope you are coping well with the whole challenge ! Take care today and hope things go well for you with some nice relaxation and happy events!

Thank you for all the help and advice. You are brilliant! Had my first dose Wednesday. Nobody told me it was Lucozade. Or is it Irn-bru?
