1st chemo done 17 to go....

Hi I have just started 3rd line chemo of taxol only weekly 3 weeks on 1 week off for 24 weeks (had carbo only the past two times once in 2012 (after full hysterectomy the works) and once in 2015. I was diagnosed with stage 3b low grade serous carcinoma, now have spotting like seeds apparently in the peritoneum but no lymph node or other organs touch wood the same as on my 1st recurrence). I also tried the cold cap as it's the first time it will make me lose my hair and that terrifies me although the cold cap was sooo cold/painful but I stuck it out 2.5 hours on my head with one hour of chemo in between.

I didn't ask my consultant which was probably silly why I'm having this weekly instead of 3 weekly and of course that way it would be over quicker with less hospital visits? I do realise it's smaller doses each week but I'm 44 and fit in myself? Can anybody shed any light on this?

Many thanks all you lovely brave ladies

Jo

Hi Jo,

interesting question and one I've been quickly researching myself as I think that's my route, I've found research papers but no clear answer but think that for recurrence there has been some advantage. I'm going to ask my Onc once I know what is happening with me and see what I'm told. Sorry can't be if more help but I don't want to give a wrong answer.

Hope you get on with the cold cap, my hair is about 1.5inches long and if need be Ill be clipping it off again to a grade 2 - once I reached the hair loss phase last year with first line I found I felt so much better once it was Clippered.

Keep in touch and I'll be watching the replies too!

Take care

Well done Jo - I knew you would smash this! ! And good on ya for coping with the cold cap! !! You were well braver than me on that front! !

Hope you're taking it easy today - can't shed any light on the regime that's been chosen but I'm sure someone will be able to! ! Keep in touch 💗💗💗.

I am on the ICON8B clinical trial which randomises you to one of 3 different treatment regimes. One was taxol at a lower dose weekly to see if it is better tolerated than a heavier dose every 3 weeks. I was on 1x3 weekly infusion of taxol/. Carbo and avastin - - full 8 hour days but had to come off it on round 3 I had a bad reaction to it and doctors not keen to reinstate as can be worse next time.... carbo continued along with avastin with surgery mid way but now on this only til September ( every 3 weeks ) . You might not be on a trial but there seems to be Lots of different regimes. weekly is tough as it must consume your life and routines

BUt your body may thank you in the longer run

Good luck - Janet

Thanks Janet, no I'm not on a trial and hopefully this way it will be gentler on me perhaps although the thought of 17 more weeks is pretty intense!

Good luck for your trial and I hope it's successful x

Yes it is but just give yourself up to it and strike another one off on the calendar each time

give yourself a little treat each visit. We found a lovely cafe close by and always had a cappuccino and a yummy muffin . Maybe a bigger treat when you get to the end...

wonder if your birthday is 23rd May like mine perhaps from your moniker?.. Janet235

Yes my birthday is 23rd May, how funny! I'm 44 at the mo.

I will do just that you're right about just accepting that time to go through the treatment. A treat or two on the way will be in order as well.

Hi Jo, I'm halfway though that regime and though it does seem long till the finish it has affected me far less than other chemos so it's going quite quickly. It's good to reach halfway and I'm trying to see 'glass half full' and I've got a weekend away organised for the end of the rest week next week, as well as grandchildren visiting for half term. But Wednesday, the day before treatment, I walked 45 mins to yoga, had lunch after with friend, did a Spanish group in the afternoon and then an evening meeting. So it's not like other chemo regimes. People say the fatigue sets in after about 12 sessions but by then it'll be two thirds over. Going In one day a week is time consuming but worth it as I'm ok the other days. I hope it goes well for you x
