Getting bloods done prior to chemo

Hello everyone I hope you are as well as you can be,

My care as now been transferred 60 miles away which is really inconvenient because my local hospital is 5mins away.Anyway I have to deal with it ,unfortunately the new hospital is in another health authority which adds to the complexities. I am stating a new weekly chemo regime of Carboplatin and taxol 4th in nearly 5 years, any comments on that would be appreciated,

My problem is pre chemo bloods ,if I go to the new hospital on the day of the chemo to have the bloods done it will add 3 1/2 hrs to the day. So I asked can I not have it done locally, yes as long as I arrange it . NOT sure what to do next. I have been given a blood form which differs from local, health authority.

Need some advice.

Thanks for that. Are you in the same health authority where you have your chemo ?

Yes the same . But don’t see why you can’t have test under a different authority . It’s a long enough day as it is you don’t want an extra 3 hours added as you say . Is there a walk in blood test centre in your area . Hope you get sorted xx

Hi , I’ve had my blood test done at my GP . That’s a pain having to go all that way . Be aware though that different labs seem to vary on CA 125 test . Just get a form and ask your doctor

Oh dear,

That is really perplexing! What a shame! I guess the best thing will be to ring your local GP and ask.

It’s just so completely inconvenient for a cancer patient.

And I don’t think this regime will be easy.

Not having a companion with you will make it tedious, too.

So sorry,

Hugs,

Laura

I have this situation too and it’s a pain. My local hospital and the hospital where I have treatment are officially joined together I but don’t share blood results! I would suggest asking your GP to help you navigate this. They have done BTs for me, I pick them up and take them to the chemo unit. This week the district nurse did one but the chemo unit are ringing the lab for results..... it’s a bit of a game but we generally get there in the end xx

If I get my bloods done at the GP surgery the week before treatment, they are on my records by the time I have the chemo.

I make an appointment at my GP for bloods and they send the blood with the form to the hospital and the results are put on a system which the hospital and surgery share. I would make a regular repeat appointment if you can for bloods. It takes a week or so here to get the results and two weeks notice to get a bloods appt. I’m sure your receptionist will be able to sort it out for you.

Very best wishes

Hello, on the subject of blood tests. I have a picc line and my local district nurse comes to my home to do my weekly blood tests. They are at the hospital that I receive my chemo next day. Your gp surgery can help with this. Hope your treatment goes well for you. Lots of best wishes 😃

I’m in a similar position...whilst shielding, I’ve had the district nurse visit me at home from (Dorset) surgery and so far, they have arranged to get the blood to local (Somerset) hospital for results to be available for separate treatment hospital...surprised this has not been set in motion by your treatment team(?) Perhaps have a word with your GP? ... All the best,

I live on the border of 2 different health authorities and in theory that is not supposed to be a problem. After my initial diagnosis, bloods etc done in local surgery, referred to clinic in adjoining Health authority & when I arrived they were unable to access the b/t results. Fortunately I had been advised that this can happened, so I brought a printout of the b/t from my surgery with me. I now always try to have all copies of tests etc. handy. Particularly important during aftermath of Covid.

Best of luck with your treatment 🤞🏻Excellent results.

Hi,

Sorry to hear they hv dumped more inconvenience on your life. As if having cancer isn't inconvenient enough as it is.

I am 50 miles from my hospital of excellence and how they manage it is that they send syringes and phials to my home and a community nurse visits and fills them, completing the blood form. All this is put in the phials and sent by a twice daily courier service from my local hospital to the centre of excellence 50 miles away.

It wasn't always like this but the advantage i have now is that the community nurse for cancer works from my local hospital so she delivers the pre-addressed package to the lab of the local hospital from where it is sent the same day to my cancer hospital.

You could hv blood taken at the GP surgery if they hv a similar courier service, which mine doesn't.

Not sure this helps but I was amazed how easy something that was previously impossible to organise turned out to be so easy, all thanks to Covid-19.

Good luck with the chemo. Gx

Hi there i used to have the same problem (different health authorities) and most weeks they got there ok. But I started picking up a printed out copy of my blood tests on my way to chemo as i passed the gp’s door this made it belt and braces, would this be an option for you?

I had a similar problem having bloods locally first. I made sure I entered the telephone number for the results target department and added loads of information to the blood form myself to make sure it got to the right people. Took a few goes to get it right but it ran smoothly after a while. Good luck. Xx
