I have had a barrage of blood tests done recently due to Osteoporosis, no blood test was left out, except for Magnesium that I am being tested for in the next lot of blood tests in January. My blood tests show high cholesterol so the doctor prescribed Atorvastatin 20mg. He also prescribed Propranaolol 40 mg 3 x per day as I have developed palpitations and rapid heart beat particularly in the morning. Of course due to my obession that I do not want to hinder my Osteoporosis medication which is Alendronic Acid I researched both medications. Statins I discovered can do two things, hinder bone health or improve it, depending on which article you are looking at also some articles say that beta blockers can improve bone density? As anybody else got any views on either? Also I asked the doctor about taking magnesium but he said to wait until I have my next routine blood tests in January. Should I wait or should I start taking it now? I do not take calicum tablets as I have a large kidney stone lurking in my lower kidney so get all of my calcium from dairy as I cannot get it front plant based due to oxolates, it is a mine field! I take vitamin D3 2000mg a day, plus a K2 complex which includes Vit K, Vit K2 and VitD3 400 mg. Any insights would be appreciated.

Hi Daisi124, the effect of statins on bone health seems to be that LOW doses might be neutral/beneficial to bone, but HIGH doses might be bad for the bones. endocrineweb.com/profession...

This is one of many cases where the effects of a medicine on the bones depends on DOSE and DURATION. Here is a great resource American Bone Health compiled on medicines that can be bad for the bones: americanbonehealth.org/bone...

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you are taking statins for cholesterol, you also might be doing other things (diet, exercise, diabetes treatment, etc.) that can improve your bone health at the same time.
